Here for a breath, and then gone.
The vernal ponds of Michigan don’t promise permanence. They are a sudden yielding of the earth, pooling in the quiet hollows of the woods just long enough to reflect the changing sky—and just long enough to cradle new life.
It is a profound paradox to witness: these fleeting, disappearing waters are the exact places where the forest is born. Within this temporary holding space, wood frogs and salamanders lay their eggs, trusting the short-lived sanctuary to hatch the next generation before the ground drinks the water back down.
If you stand quietly at the edge, you don’t just observe this shift—you feel it register in your nervous system. The sharp, damp cold sinking into your skin. The frantic, life-affirming pulse of the spring peepers vibrating up through the mud and into your bones. The sudden, physical awareness of life rushing to begin within a closing window of time.
It is a lesson in temporality. Our biology is so often wired to hold on tight, to brace against change, to build structures that last. But these ephemeral nurseries remind the body how to just be present with what is passing. To witness the profound act of beginning, and to sense the water slowly receding back into the soil without needing to make it stay. 💧🌲🐸

My heart fills when I see art that our Airbnb guests leave behind, a remnant of their stay, a record of their creative process. As an art therapist, I create with people for a living. Setting the stage for guests to feel safe and comfortable to make art is gratifying in a different way than creating with my clients. I set the intention for this cabin to be a retreat space, a quiet respite from our busy lives to reconnect with ourselves. My hope is that they play our instruments, use our art supplies, walk the trails…carve out time for themselves. by @starforeststay

Born to create, born to live, born to die; let us enjoy our time together practicing magic under a wondrous, dark-starred-sky. Retreat to Port Austin—walk in the woods—treat yourself to present peace in the trees. Breathe in burning Michigan cedar, saunas make letting go easier; let mother earth be your teacher. Trust those who are capable and willing to guide, helping you discover that your power resides inside. We have to think bigger if we hope to let in better; expanding what we think we know if we hope to grow; slowing down to better understand the burdens we carry in tow. Doing the work doesn’t mean we have to be alone, Michigan is a sanctuary we call home. Water on three sides, two peninsulas, and the beating heart of its people inside. Winter is her protector, while her Great Lakes connect her to the Seven Seas. The automobile takes us two hours north to her thumb, where her sand dunes and freshwater coastlines beat like a drum. Find a cabin in the woods: a Star Forest Stay aside the Saginaw Bay. Take a polar dip in a Great Lake. Cut the ice and plunge into the wonder beneath, open to receive the lessons and blessings its journey can teach. Snow descending from clouds in the sky, becoming creeks, rivers, and streams. Pushed and pulled by the moon and stars, carried with us wherever we are. Sweat, sauna, sleep, and repeat; growth demands intentional retreat. Love guides us to what and who we need—journeying inward helps us see—our limitations are born from what we believe. Better acquaint yourself with each and everything you told yourself you couldn’t be—let that shit go and finally be free. Reconnect with nature, remember who you are—isn’t it time we all reclaim our place amongst the stars? Birdwatching, stargazing, sunrise, and sunsets, there comes a time when each of us is due for an organic reset.
