I’ve almost never mentioned my daughters online, social media or otherwise, because I wanted them to enter life as adults without a presence on the internet. Now, as I spend the next month prepping for both of them to leave home (the eldest going to university in the UK, the youngest sailing he Atlantic for 10 months), I feel excited, overwhelmed, bereft, and grateful. Grateful that I’ve had the last 18 years to hold their hands and teach them to fly. Grateful for long, multi-day paddles on rivers in the Yukon, and for days trekking in northern Vietnam. Grateful for quiet moments as we read books together and grateful for the laughter that echoed through our tiny A-frame cabin on cold winter nights. It’s a crazy thing, parenting. Somehow, you’re allowed to take these tiny, little, helpless creatures home from the hospital and then, in a breath, they move forward into the wondrous potential of their own lives, without you. It’s almost too much to bear. But oh, the joy of watching them fly. by @stasia.schmidt

A quick little recap of my time in the backcountry with photographer friends. Wind (so much wind), wildflowers, cerulean blues, a touch of smoke, ridges, cornices, and laughter. 🙌📸 by @stasia.schmidt

We’re surrounded by images, but how do we create work that actually feels like us?

At the Canadian Photography Conference in Calgary, join Stasia Schmidt (@stasia.schmidt) for ‘Spark to Blaze: Finding Your Unique Creative Vision in Photography’.

Based in Calgary, Alberta, Stasia Schmidt is a fine art photographer known for her evocative landscapes and portraits that blend simplicity, form, and subtle surrealism. Her work explores femininity in nature and has been exhibited across Canada, the United States, and Europe.
A recipient of the 2024 Leica Women Foto Project award and named Emerging Artist of the Year by the Exposure Photography Festival, Stasia brings both recognition and real-world creative insight to her teaching.

In this session, she explores how to move beyond the noise of social media and constant visual overload to find clarity in your own artistic voice. Through practical, in-the-field techniques, she shares how to enter creative flow, break through self-doubt, and create work that feels honest, meaningful, and uniquely yours.

This is about more than inspiration, it’s about learning how to trust your vision.

Every summer a gang of photographers and friends head into the Rockies backcountry for hiking, laughing, and maybe some shooting. We’ve seen: extreme weather, deep type 2.5 fun, tents and fingernails lost, memorials for dear friends gone too soon, and new categories of alpine sport games. Last year was Shale Pass (pictured here), this summer will be an entirely new spot, and I’m already so excited for backcountry bougie. We’re pleased to announce that Stasia Schmidt has been elected as the Exposure Photography Festival’s new President and Chair of the Board, succeeding Dona Schwartz following a decade of extraordinary leadership and service.

Many in our community already know Stasia through her longstanding connection to Exposure — first as an artist, later as Emerging Photographer of the Year, and more recently as a volunteer and board member. Her appointment reflects the kind of artist-centred, community-rooted future we’re continuing to build together.

In her new role, Stasia will help guide Exposure into its next chapter with a focus on supporting artists, strengthening partnerships, and ensuring the Festival remains sustainable, accessible, and internationally connected for years to come.
