We’re surrounded by images, but how do we create work that actually feels like us?

At the Canadian Photography Conference in Calgary, join Stasia Schmidt (@stasia.schmidt) for ‘Spark to Blaze: Finding Your Unique Creative Vision in Photography’.

Based in Calgary, Alberta, Stasia Schmidt is a fine art photographer known for her evocative landscapes and portraits that blend simplicity, form, and subtle surrealism. Her work explores femininity in nature and has been exhibited across Canada, the United States, and Europe.
A recipient of the 2024 Leica Women Foto Project award and named Emerging Artist of the Year by the Exposure Photography Festival, Stasia brings both recognition and real-world creative insight to her teaching.

In this session, she explores how to move beyond the noise of social media and constant visual overload to find clarity in your own artistic voice. Through practical, in-the-field techniques, she shares how to enter creative flow, break through self-doubt, and create work that feels honest, meaningful, and uniquely yours.

This is about more than inspiration, it’s about learning how to trust your vision.

For nearly 15 years, Paul Zizka Workshops has brought photo education to hundreds of photographers through in-person workshops and retreats. Our online photo community, Fuelled by Creativity, now has 23,000 subscribers.

For our workshops, we keep the classics and work hard to add new experiences to help you expand and grow in your craft and creativity. Our photo workshops go beyond the camera; they get you thinking about your intention and the intangible elements of photography. Guests leave as friends and with a positive imprint on their lives.

We still have a few spots left on our workshops currently on offer:

〰️StoryScapes 2026 - 2 spots left (landscape masterclass at Emerald Lake)
〰️Madagascar 2027 - 2 spots left (think: endemic species on a mystical island)
〰️Churchill 2027 - 2 spots left (a premium polar bear experience - need I say more?)

Galapagos 2028 is sold out, but you can join the waitlist. And we’ll likely be launching our Creative Flow and Morning Light workshops later this year.

Can’t join us in person? Join Fuelled by Creativity. All links in bio.

We’re pleased to announce that Stasia Schmidt has been elected as the Exposure Photography Festival’s new President and Chair of the Board, succeeding Dona Schwartz following a decade of extraordinary leadership and service.

Many in our community already know Stasia through her longstanding connection to Exposure — first as an artist, later as Emerging Photographer of the Year, and more recently as a volunteer and board member. Her appointment reflects the kind of artist-centred, community-rooted future we’re continuing to build together.

In her new role, Stasia will help guide Exposure into its next chapter with a focus on supporting artists, strengthening partnerships, and ensuring the Festival remains sustainable, accessible, and internationally connected for years to come.

Throwback Traumwelt by Charlotte Muller at 198 Gallery Brooklyn
An immersive collaboration by Carly Lave, Johnny Tomasiello, Rob Woodcox, Stasia Schmidt, and Sok Song.
Using wearable MUGIC® motion sensors, Carly Lave’s movements generate a live responsive soundscape developed by Johnny Tomasiello, creating a real-time dialogue between body, sound, and space. Set within Rob Woodcox’s sculptural installation, Ephemeral Garden composed of suspended textiles, projection, and photography the work explores impermanence, memory, resilience, and the evolving relationship between humans and technology.
Sok Song’s RE:Member extends the exhibition’s meditation on memory and transformation through folded forms, textile impressions, and sculptural traces that evoke inherited histories, migration, and absence.
Alongside this, Stasia Schmidt’s Ephemerality introduces ethereal fabric interventions within vast natural landscapes, using flowing drapery and layered textiles to blur the line between body and environment. Her work transforms fabric into a symbol of fragility, disappearance, and renewal, echoing the exhibition’s exploration of impermanence and material transformation.
