In 2024, we all had something to vote for — whether it be access to quality public education, the ability to make a fair living wage no matter where you live, or ensuring everyone has access to affordable medical treatments. In a decision June 29 in Watson v. RNC, the Roberts Court ruled to protect the voice of voters who mail their ballots! The decision to honor ballot grace periods means that over 114 million voters can confidently vote by mail knowing their mail in ballots will be counted for the November midterm elections.Join @statevoices and our State Tables to celebrate this important victory, and spread the word that voting by mail is safe and protected by the Constitution. The case upheld states' rights to count ballots postmarked by Election Day, even if they arrive a few days later due to postal delay. That protects voters in 14 states — including Nevada, New York, Washington, Virginia, and Massachusetts. While this is good news, one ruling doesn't end the effort to keep people from exercising their right to vote and getting their voices heard. In fact, this is a key strategy for those in power to maintain power this November, because they know voters are unhappy with their decisions. Happy Pride Month! 🌈This June, we celebrate the joy, resilience, love and remarkable people who have fought for decades to live authentically and freely.As we celebrate, we also acknowledge what our TLGBQIA+ community faces right now. Across the country, we're seeing a wave of legislation targeting transgender individuals — especially youth — along with rising rates of discrimination and violence. This is not just a policy debate, it is a fight over political power. Across Memphis, Tennessee, and the South, communities are seeing efforts to split, dilute, and redraw organized Black political influence.Matia Powell @CIVICTN reminds us that the organizing in TN did not start with the crisis. Years of building statewide infrastructure, trust, and cross-community partnerships meant leaders could respond quickly, connect across states, and move resources where they were needed.Even as lawsuits move forward, many residents still do not know what changed or why.
