Flying V presents a workshop performance of @staticmusical the 2022 @capitalfringe Best Musical winner by teenage playwright and composer, @tessrowan Static takes place on the Appalachian trail and heavily features morse code into the story of a teenager using her radio, her songs, and her intuition to figure out what happened to her missing father. Flying V has worked with Tess to develop the concept, music, and script from last year’s Fringe, and will present a staged reading of Static with a live band for two nights in August.Static is an original adventure musical with a radio blend of musical theater, rock, folk, and immersive morse code clues. We had a wonderful showcase performance of Static this evening at the Contemporary American Theater Festival (CATF.) Over the past few days, we have spent time workshopping and developing Static at CATF, singing new songs, trying out new ideas, and crafting the story. At the post-show Q&A, the Static team discussed the ins and outs of developing new work and original musicals like Static. If I hadn’t decided to write a musical called Static when I was 14, I would not have found out about the wonderful world of long-distance hiking. I was a middle schooler who loved musicals and dreamed of writing my own. I had no idea how to write a musical, much less how to play an instrument, and I definitely knew nothing about thru-hiking.After six years, Static has been performed several times across the country. I just completed my thru-hike of the Long Trail. I was given the trail name “Storyteller” while hiking 272 miles across Vermont. I can say that I’m a musical theater writer and a thru-hiker!The southern portion of the Long Trail is shared with the Appalachian Trail, and I loved being able to hike over the same mountains that inspired Static. I couldn’t be happier that musicals lead me into the world of thru-hiking! Thanks to the Community Engaged Summer Theater Grant from NYU, I’m producing an audio theater piece about the Long Trail. It’s sad to hear that the annual Capital Fringe Festival is shutting down after two decades. Static got its start at the festival in 2022 and would not be where it is today without the opportunity and support from Capital Fringe. So, I thought I’d share this never-before-seen clip from our Fringe tech rehearsal along with Static’s Fringe story as a way to look back on this incredible festival. Here’s the story! When I was 17, I submitted Static for the Capital Fringe Festival, knowing that it was a space that encouraged DIY theater and original works from new artists. I remember I was in my high school theater class when I received the message that Static was accepted into the festival, and was so excited to share the wonderful news with my class, friends, and family. Over the next few months, we assembled a wonderful cast and crew, eager to put on a new piece of theater coming out of the pandemic. That summer, Static sold out every performance, and the audience response was overwhelming. Due to COVID-19 cases within the cast, Static was not staged as originally intended, but we felt so much support from the community through the changes. By the end of the summer, Static ended up winning Best Ensemble and Best Musical in the Capital Fringe Audience Awards. Thank you to the incredible people who have led Capital Fringe for 20 years, and took a chance on a 17-year-old writer/director in 2022. Thank you to the cast and crew of the 2022 production, who adapted to many changes throughout the process of putting on this new work. Thank you to the audiences who supported local artists and Fringe productions such as Static - and please continue to support live theater and new work. I look forward to seeing what Capital Fringe does next, outside of the annual festival. @capitalfringe #capitalfringe #capfringe22…And in true DIY theater fashion, during this video clip, lighting cues were being rewritten, we were working in a new space for the first time (a Foot Locker turned theater venue), and we were singing the now-cut song, “Breathe It In” (which has now been replaced with a new and hopefully very much improved singing Morse code ensemble number.) by @staticmusical
