Planning a visit to the Statue of Liberty? 🗽Crown and pedestal reservations are limited and are required to enter the monument. Crown tickets typically sell out several months in advance, while pedestal tickets can sell out several days in advance. 🗽There is only one authorized ticket vendor for ferry service to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. It is recommended to purchase your tickets through StatueCityCruises.com. 🗽Ellis Island is part of our park and is included in your visit. Visitors arriving later in the day may not have time to visit both islands. Visit NPS.gov/ELIS to find out more. 🗽There are restrictions on what you can bring to the park. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated 140 years ago today, on October 28th, 1886. In those 140 years, the statue has stood through hurricanes, blizzards, earthquakes, two World Wars, and a Great Depression. Throughout the years, the American people have prioritized the care and lighting of the statue as a symbol of "Liberty Enlightening the World". Happy 140th!!! 🗽🎆🎉 📸: NPS by @statueellisnps
The Statue of Liberty turns 140 this week, and visitors have been climbing to the crown for most of that time: 🗽For the first two years, visitors would have climbed a wooden staircase that came with the statue from France. In 1888, a double helical spiral staircase was installed to replace the wooden stairs. 🗽Though there were multiple attempts to install electric lighting inside the statue in the early years, many people who went to the crown during the first 21 years were completely in the dark as they climbed. 🗽Back in the day, there was no limit on the number of people who could climb to the head. Over the years, as it became more and more popular to visit the Statue of Liberty, this translated to very long lines. On busy days, the interior staircase would have been packed full of people from open until close. Nowadays, crown tickets are limited and can sell out several months in advance. This week, we are celebrating the 140th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty’s dedication in New York Harbor! The statue was originally built in a factory in Paris and brought to the United States in over 200 crates. When it arrived on the island, the copper and iron pieces were stored in a makeshift shed for over a year because the pedestal was nowhere near complete. After additional fundraising, as well as the design and creation of an anchoring system, the Statue of Liberty was completed and unveiled on October 28th, 1886. 📸: NPS by @statueellisnps

What are you supposed to get someone for their 100th anniversary? The Statue of Liberty received a new torch for the 100th anniversary of her dedication in New York Harbor. The torch that was held in the statue's right hand for nearly 100 years was damaged over time, and engineers in the 1980s decided to replace it as part of the centennial restoration. You can get an up-close view of the original torch right here on Liberty Island. Visit NPS.gov/STLI to plan your trip! 📹: NPS Video Description: Panning shots showing different angles of the Statue of Liberty's original torch. The torch features a criss cross pattern of copper strips with yellow cathedral glass inlaid in the spaces. The ornate copper balcony surrounding the torch is visible. by @statueellisnps
Today marks the 25th anniversary of the attacks on September 11th, 2001. Ceremonies will take place across New York City to commemorate and honor the loss, bravery, sacrifice, and resilience of the people forever affected by the attacks. Photo Credit: Library of Congress by @statueellisnps
Did you know that the Statue of Liberty is in constant motion? Underneath the statue’s copper skin is an iron and steel framework that provides Lady Liberty’s structural support. Designed by Gustave Eiffel’s engineering firm, the skeletal structure that holds the Statue of Liberty in place is flexible, allowing the statue to withstand the strong winds in New York Harbor. On a particularly windy day, visitors to the crown can feel a sway of up to 3 inches, and the torch can sway up to 6 inches! Reservations to the crown are limited and can sell out several months in advance. Today kicks off National Park Week! National Park Sites across the country have been celebrating 250 years of American Independence with reenactments, programs, fireworks, and festivities. Visitors to the Statue of Liberty are often surprised to see Park Rangers from the National Park Service, but we have been taking care of Lady Liberty since the 1930s. Throughout the week, we will be highlighting some of the different roles, services, and programs that Park Rangers provide to help our visitors continue to celebrate America 250! 📸: NPS by @statueellisnps
The majority of the people who immigrated through Ellis Island were bound for another part of the country. This often meant a long train ride to any number of destinations in the United States. The Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal was one of several railroad stations that immigrants were ferried to after passing through inspection at Ellis Island. According to a 1907 Railroad Gazette article “Each railroad on the New Jersey side of the Hudson has a special waiting room or passenger station for immigrants.” The outside world was not allowed to enter these waiting rooms. The goal was to keep new arrivals separate from any scam artists, or “land sharks” who might try to take advantage of someone who didn’t know the language or customs of a new place. Today, you can visit this historic terminal in Liberty State Park on your way to the New Jersey ferry to Statue of Liberty National Monument. 📸: NPS by @statueellisnps
It’s World Ranger Day! World Ranger Day commemorates rangers who have been injured or killed while serving in the line of duty and honors the work that rangers do to ensure that our public lands are protected and preserved for future generations. Like rangers across the globe, National Park Service rangers work to protect and preserve natural, historical, and cultural resources across the US. Be sure to say hello to a ranger the next time you visit your local parksite, like right here at Statue of Liberty National Monument! 📷: NPS by @statueellisnps
