Steady Hand Records Presents…

Lou & Co.’s new album “The Fool” out now.

Lead by deep friend of the label Louis Cohen, this freeform take on the American Songbook is an engaged, improv-loving journey through the musical worlds of Cohen’s jazz guitar upbringing and reverence for pop chamber music a la Bacharach and Sinatra.

The album was made by a fam of collaborators from Louis’ other bands Total Heat and GROOP, as well as featured musicians from Hoover III, Prettiest Eyes, Girlpool, and more.

Recorded almost entirely live, The Fool focuses on lyricism and subtlety. The live band features an all star cast made up of Ross Chait (Total Heat, Okkervil River, Girl Pool) on percussion and tape loops, Paco Casanova (Prettiest Eyes, CFM) on keys, Sivan Silver-Swartz (Total Heat) on outsider lead guitar, and Bert Hoover (Hooveriii, Groop) on bass, and features Emelia Austin (Gal Pal), James Novick (Slo Heat), Anna Wallace, and Aimee Neimann as special features. The Fool was mixed and recorded by Mark Rains at the Station House in LA and mastered by Kern Haug.

Squeegees On Ice - the second album from the band Squeegees, out today on @steadyhandrecords !

From Ross Chait: Squeegees is a loosely defined and loosely executed music project centered around the collaboration of longtime friends Sid, Mat and Nick. The group has maintained their air of mystery both through the obscured and ungraspable sound of their recordings, and their limited musical output. They’ve performed around Los Angeles a handful of times, notably at the All Star Lanes bowling alley and at a bar in Landers, California. The latter performance culminated with singer Mat getting accidentally getting punched in the face and the band’s drum kit being run over by a car in the parking lot. Stranger than fiction real world events such as these, with a mellow, yet sharply poetic observational voice are the fodder for Squeegees first and only album Bad Old Days, self-released on bandcamp in 2020. This year, Squeegees will release Squeegees II on Steady Hand Records. The only thing to say about the music for sure, is that it elevates beyond the sum of its fragile parts, a la heady favorites like Beat Rhythm Fashion’s “Turn of the Century” or Palberta’s “Sound of the Beat.” As the world fries and life grows deeper, we hope to hear more from Squeegees while melting away. by @steadyhandrecords

Moraga South American Jazz - Alas & Roots

Ensemble lead by highly excellent perc’ist Christian Moraga. South American rhythms gone all the way like this are so sleek and cool, but can’t be ignored or listened to in the background. I wish I could say I knew exactly how it works, but it’s a vibe fr fr.

Cool and groovy jazz funk with generational soprano sax playing from the title artist. Durrah was a session player on a number of Black Jazz records releases, worked extensively with Doug Hammond. Maybe one day I’ll ask Doug about him.

Sun Ra - Roma 1977

Possibly my favorite Sun Ra release, exemplifying his mastery of traditional blues forms and the far out seeker sound he was becoming ordained the master of. 1977 finds him fresh off the groundbreaking Montreux set and a tour of west Africa. Interestingly released on Paul Bley’s Improvising Artists label, oft mentioned in this collection.
