Wrapped up my last comp of the year today, and it was a year of firsts. First time giving up weight on purpose, first time competing out of state, and 10 competitions with 29 matches in total. Since starting jiu jitsu in the summer of 2023 I’ve competed 27 times, and yeah, I’ve lost a lot. Like a lot. But these last two years, especially this one, I really turned the tide. I placed or came close to placing multiple times, beat higher belts, and never felt overmatched no matter who was across from me.

This was a great first year in Tampa. I wanted to challenge myself to compete more than last year, and to test myself against higher belts and bigger weight classes. I spent almost the whole year going in lighter on comp day, and it only made my technique stronger. This year I’ve honestly felt like I could have won every match I was in, with a few adjustments but neither here nor there.

Thank you to Ray, my original coach, mike and manny for all the time you’ve put into me. And thank you to everyone at Freedom and GTS, the roaches gang for the help all year. I couldn’t have done it without you. If I had to break every medal I have and give everyone who’s ever helped me so far I wouldn’t have enough pieces.

POV: your boy wins his Dana White contender series and makes it to the UFC. Congrats lui, appreciate you taking me under your wing when I started training and the countless hours and weekends we spent training and you teaching me. You helped during a really rough time and you deserved this like crazy, sorry I was celebrating in PJS. Can’t wait to continue losing my voices in all your future fights under the @ufc banner by @steegers.bjj

Not my best day at ADCC Miami, went 1-2 but hey, only lost to purple belts 🤣. Testing myself by competing once a month at a higher weight has taught me a lot. Refined my technique enough to catch bigger guys, but time to cut back to 170/76kg and hit the weights. Grateful for everyone helping me get better every day, without y’all I wouldn’t have the confidence to step on the mats. Glad I was able to compete in front of my brother for the first time @felixdat99 by @steegers.bjj

4th ADCC Open. First time competing out of state and my first time back at 83kg since my very first blue belt tournament almost a year and a half ago, where I was submitted in both of my matches.

Today, I made it further than I ever have before at adcc, and for the first time, I truly felt capable.

I’m incredibly grateful to have found @freedomfightersmma as my first and home gym, where I built my foundation, and to everyone at @gracie_tampa_south for making me feel so welcome since I moved.

Finished the day in 5th out of 30 and 4-2, with a mix of points and submissions. Lots of improvements to be proud of, and even more things to work on.

Thank you to Mike Lugo, Melissa, and Marisa for making the trip, and a huge congratulations to Lugo and Marisa for their performances as well.

It was a fun trip, a great experience, and I’m thankful to God for allowing me to have opportunities like this. I’m also grateful for my wonderful girlfriend, who supports this crazy hobby of mine.
