I found this photo while storing Kelsey + James’ wedding and it was clearly accidentally taken during portraits and.. I freaking love it. Wedding days give me so much energy and apart from hiking/kayaking/reading in the sun - are what I love doing on weekends.

And since my engagement on Instagram is so low right now and no one is paying attention, let me scream -

I LOVE MY JOB AND LOVE THIS INDUSTRY AND WANT TO SMILE LIKE THIS ALL THE DAYS OF MY LIFE.

Hi,

This is your fresh-start month reminder that it’s in the CHAOTIC places that beauty comes out in droves. This session was loud, with snacks on the floor and crusted onto the knees of my pants. Everyone had a tearful moment, bandaids were hidden with wardrobe improvements, bathroom breaks and panicked looks were always made space for. Everyone wondered if anything had been done.

But this session was gifted in love, to grandparents who had already weathered their own five kid messes and parenting hurdles, and so it was all okay. Beauty did its thing!

Look at the chaos! Look at the little hands and feet!
Look at the cousins! Look at the age gaps!

Look at the personalities and the friendships developing. It will never be the same, it’ll just keep turning and growing.

And chaos brings it all to the forefront of the camera.

IT’S WEDDING WEEK.

Which means that one day, a few years back, when Dreyke’s friends were all sitting around and showing him pictures of single gal pals, was actually the moment a new little world started building 🥹

Then he chose + pursued her and she, him.
And dates became life and a certain question became serious and joyful and easy to ask. I’m sure there were highs and lows and all the in-between but one thing is absolute public knowledge - that they care for the other and celebrate the other and by the end of the week, they will be one another’s.

The beauty of the angle and the stillness to wait for all the concepts to run into each other in one frame.

A lot of photography is anticipating and waiting - recently at a wedding I was standing above the bride as she waited with her dad before the ceremony. I was on Super8 and I knew the noise of the film would cause her to look up and probably (most likely) smile.

She was obviously excited and we had built a good relationship throughout the day. I wanted the organic surprise followed by a really genuine moment of appreciation. So even though the shot wasn’t quite there, I clicked the camera on - sure enough, that’s exactly what happened. She looked up honestly, smiled widely, and there was a moment of real connection.

Moments don’t *always* need insertion ~
all they need is prediction.

Last little favorite as I work on blogging this little wedding. I’m preparing for a fun (longer) weekend this week that kicks off working for one of my favorites (@carlymacphoto) And now that I’m back on Instagram, maybe I’ll take you along for the ride!

It’s a little PHOTO DUMP.
Proof of the party is near the back.

Here’s what I remember from this day. Matching blue sweaters and cute jeans, crouching really low that Brette notices and probably thinks I’m crazy, satin dresses with flash, the sweetness before a first look, a poodle, the best man making everyone laugh and cry, little kids and grandmas, stylizing my first Polaroid, all of our cameras dumped in a corner and @kellyrussophoto telling me that if I’m going to keep working for her - I need to buy a camera strap.

Fair enough. Now I have a strap.

Movement and moments, almost done with Alexa + Tim’s gallery!

This year has been a bit hectic but images like this one (and so many others) keep me sitting behind my laptop, slightly hunched with a cup of hot coffee.

I held off posting for a while because I really should throw some summer greens up on my feed - but what the heck, it’s been six summers of only posting moodier images in the midst of pretty greens and sunsets and I think I’ll just roll with it now. They do exist, in almost every gallery, but idk..
