“Really, I’ve just been having fun. That’s the only thing I can say with this whole thing.”

Three years ago, Joseph X started running with WeRun313, and quickly caught the attention of the group’s cofounder, Joe Robinson. Joseph recalled that after a few 5Ks, Robinson noticed he was quickly adapting and had a different type of fitness, so encouraged him to do a half marathon in fall 2023.

Joseph ran distances from 800m to two miles in high school (“I would jump in where the team needed points”), but not super competitively. After that half marathon, though, his training and competitive nature picked up and he ran 3:22:50 at the 2024 Detroit Free Press Marathon.

He credited his run communities (WeRun313, Black Men Run Detroit, Avenue Runners and Walkers, Dub City Runners) with stimulating his development as a person and a runner. He is especially involved with WeRun313, and “would like to be an advocate through WeRun313 and be that person in the community helping to give people that healthy push.”

This year, Joseph started working with Machine Athletics, and has increasingly found himself in a different echelon of fitness. He succinctly described coach Asia Rawls’ training as “undeniable.”

In early August, he hit a 5K PR. Then on August 24, he ran his first 50K with a dozen other guys from BMR Detroit, and met his sub-five-hour goal to finish 7th overall and 2nd in his age group. Then, a week later, he and a group from WeRun313 ran the Sydney Marathon.

His original focus on just completing his second marathon was ultimately consumed by his desire – and accumulated fitness – to run fast. “We didn’t fly halfway across the world just to have fun,” he joked. “That was the initial thought, but with my competitive nature, once we were getting closer to doing the race, I was like, ‘No, we’re going to actually push it. We’re going to cook.’”

And cook he did, crushing a 2:53:11.

Later this year he’ll pace a friend at Detroit Free Press, then see if he can take more time off his PR at CIM in December.

“Challenge yourself, and you’ll be surprised at the different things you can do,” he said. “A year ago, I wouldn’t have thought I’d be here, for sure.” by @steezxurkel
