Stella Geppert is a sculptor and performer whose experimental work draws on choreography, statuary, body extensions, and graphic notations. Her art is centered around an exploration of the body as a medium and material for communicative processes, the global repercussions of simple actions, energetic physical states, and transgenerational transmissions of behaviors.⁠
⁠
The publication “CONNECTIVITIES. Handbook for Embodied Communication” is the first to offer comprehensive insight into Stella Geppert’s approach. Essays by contributors with expertise in dance studies (Gabriele Brandstetter), immunology (Michael Meyer-Hermann), and art studies and body techniques (Joana P. R. Neves, Daniela von Damaros) shed light on the engagement with Geppert’s conceptual and collective practices. “CONNECTIVITIES” charts the oeuvre’s multidimensional networking of invisible modes of communication such as the metabolic processes of breathing and organs, language-based movements of the head, cellular communication, and gestures of the collective blighting of landscapes.⁠

I am very excited to be part of your wonderful exhibition, which features works from the “Two Feet Seven Inches” series (2018) as well as a new piece: „Snow Leopard Track -
Tracing a Track: Paw – Hand – Landscape“ (2026).
Both works explore the destruction of the landscape caused by human actions and the species threatened with extinction as a result.

The title Drawn from Quiet Waters carries a deliberate double meaning. It points to the many drawings and works on paper presented in the exhibition, foregrounding the immediacy of the line and the gesture. But it also suggests something taking shape from a source, whether a place, a memory, an observation, an encounter, or an inner state. ‚Quiet waters‘ refers to the tranquil atmosphere of Kaga Iryokuen and its garden, while evoking the deeper, less visible currents from which artistic ideas and images emerge. Together, the words describe both a medium and a process: art as a way of observing, absorbing, and translating the world, and the exhibition itself as an act of bringing something to the surface.

1-3: Snow Carrier, 2026
Snow Carrier is a floor relief cast in silicone, into which the tracks of various animal species have been imprinted. Some of these tracks are real, others are replicas. It illustrates how we share space – the Earth’s surface – with other species. The material typically used in sculpture to reproduce the same forms over and over is employed here as a unique piece, alluding to the age of fossil fuels from which the silicone was originally derived. Overall, the cast resembles a tapestry depicting a picturesque snowy landscape, as the earthy residue of the footprint is, in turn, imprinted into the silicone layer.
