One week ago today, we lost our best guy. Benny’s final week consisted of being treated like a king at our wedding, a blessing from our Rabbi, a final birthday celebration with friends, and receiving the most compassionate care from his surgeon and nurses.

Our last year together was mostly filled with laughter, adventures, joy and popcorn. My only hope is that he wasn’t suffering silently for long and his spirit will return to us in another form.

These photos and videos are the best reminder of how loved he was and how deeply he loved everyone around him. The audio is the best part.

Writing is often the best way for me to process and express complex feelings.

Last week, I held the duality of life in both hands.

Great joy and deep sorrow. Celebration and loss.

I married my favorite person in a ceremony that radiated love in all directions. We exchanged heartfelt vows that brought our nearest and dearest to tears, in front of the desert backdrop of our dreams.

And just days later, we said goodbye to one of my greatest loves. My quiet companion through so many chapters, my soulmate and best friend long before Jason and I began dating.

Benny spent the first half of his life surviving on the streets of Tijuana. In an unlikely twist of fate, the universe brought us together. I gave him a new lease on life, and he carried me through many seasons of healing.

Somehow, despite being so sick after surgery and a sudden cancer diagnosis, he rallied for our big day. The nurses told him he had a job to do when they released him from the hospital, and he delivered in spades. Once that job was complete, he began to let go, as if he knew he was leaving me in capable hands and his purpose had been fulfilled.

To feel life’s greatest joy alongside its deepest sorrow is disorienting and humbling. It has shown us how fragile and beautiful it is to love so deeply that you are shaped by it and changed in its absence.

I am learning that joy does not erase grief, and grief does not diminish joy. They live side by side. If anything, they deepen one another.

And so we are learning to hold both, fully and tenderly, as we step into this new chapter of life. by @stephbernrose
