Firearm misinformation in the media is widespread.

So, NJC is changing that.

The summer class visited the shooting range to learn about firearms to be better equipped covering the second amendment. Better reporting starts with a better understanding.

“Virginia Democrats took a shot at restricting AR-style rifles this year, but the move appears to have backfired,” writes @stephen.gutowski, the founder of the Reload.

“In June, the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) reported a remarkable increase in reviews for long gun sales, which include rifles and shotguns. The vetting system — an imperfect but reliable gauge for sales — saw a single-month record in Virginia and more than three times the number of checks during the same period in 2025. The state saw 43,553 NICS long gun checks last month, more than any other state, despite being the 12th most populous.”

Today I'm doing another gun reporting class for the National Journalism Center. I teach a classroom section on the common issues reporters may encounter when covering guns as well as some common pitfalls and how to avoid them. Then we do a range portion where they're able to fire some common guns. taken in XCAL Shooting Sports and Fitness by @stephen.gutowski

Here is my segment on CNN about the gun in the Guthrie kidnapping. I would also add that the gun be an airgun replica or something like that since we don't get a close up view. Him carrying it outside the waistband like that also seems intended to threaten since it's not a common way to open carry. by @stephen.gutowski
