Excellence is rarely built on indifference.

In a world that sometimes celebrates looking effortless, detached, or too cool to care, the truth is the opposite: the people who make the biggest impact are the ones who care the most.

They care about the craft.
They care about the people they serve.
They care about getting better.
They care enough to try again when things don’t work out.

Caring deeply means you’ll sometimes fail publicly. It means you’ll invest more energy than others. It means you won’t hide.

But it also means you give yourself a real chance to do meaningful work.

Currently reflecting as I’m reading @bradstulberg brilliant new book!

Apex challenge 2025 🙌
After 26 hours and 9 minutes…
7 relentless laps…
52 miles (84KM)…
and the equivalent of climbing Aconcagua (6961m) the highest peak in South America
The 7 Summits Challenge is officially complete for the @highperformancefoundation ✅
This wasn’t just about endurance, this was about High Performance Resilience. The kind of resilience we strive to build in our school community every day @healing.school
🔹 When your body says stop, your mind steps up.
🔹 When your mind wavers, your purpose and values take over.
🔹 And when that purpose is strong, you just have to keep going.
There were dark moments. Tired legs. Blisters. Cold nights. But what pulled me through was the strength of the people around me and the mindset we carry. My @whoop band makes interesting reading 🫣

💪 Huge thanks to Dan who I teamed up throughout. We kept each other going through the toughest moments. Couldn’t have done it without that shared determination.

🙏 And of course, to Steve Hoey the calm, capable support we all needed and work in the shadows keeping me alive. From food to encouragement, and keeping everyone back home updated, thank you.

And to our amazing school community . Thank you for every message, every bit of belief. You were with me on that mountain.

This challenge may be complete but the journey of high performance never is. We do the best we can, where we are with what we have got!

And finally what a incredible community and team @apex.officialuk

Looking forward to to getting home to the kids @sallylogan and the new rabbit 🐇

Today I had the privilege of attending, How to Unlock the DNA of a High Performance Culture with Damian Hughes in Manchester. This is a session I have been waiting on for a long time. @liquidthinker

It was an incredible opportunity to reflect and connect, and what I came away with will take some time to process. It is not often you can spend an entire day captivated and inspired, surrounded by so much energy in a room full of leaders and high performers facing personal and professional challenges yet all united by a desire to improve.

A few things stood out as I head home on the train:

No slides or gimmicks: Damian didn’t use any prompts, fluff, or rigid formulae’s. This was entirely about reframing thinking and finding solutions together.

The power of deep thinking: I came away with 15 pages of notes, a sense of calm and clarity. Too often as leaders, we spend all our time in the action and the outcome, forgetting the vital importance of simply thinking.

Authentic connection: The power of the day lay not just in the insights from the High Performance environments and Damian’s research, but in the people in the room, paired with Damian’s genuine curiosity and commitment to helping others.

For the duration of the session, I made a conscious decision to put my phone away and just be. Maybe there is a lesson in that for all of us.

These are my initial thoughts on the train ride home as I begin processing the mental models shared.

A massive thank you to Damian and Lesley for a brilliant day. If you ever have the opportunity to experience a session like this do it. You won’t regret it.

350 @parkrunuk today 🥳

Opted for @hullparkrun this morning and ran 17:37 my quickest of the year and a nice way to kick off a new age category at 45.

It always comes back to @bradstulberg core principles:

The secret is that there is no secret.
Consistency over intensity.
Progress over perfection.
Fundamentals over fads.
Over and over again.

We love the narrative of the heroic, max-effort push. But sustainable progress in running, leadership and life isn’t forged in sporadic spikes. It’s built on the quiet discipline of showing up, banking the work and letting compounding interest do its job.

Show up. Stay in the game. Repeat.

Great to see @davety85 and @leehammond16 (hope you recover and get back on it soon from injury!)

Thanks as always to @runperformancelab @eyroadrunners

Same time next week and out the door running again tomorrow?

“Consistency beats intensity. Pushing to your limit once in a while doesn’t create growth; showing up and doing the work day after day does.”

Tomorrow @hullcity steps back onto a Premier League League pitch, and if you listen to the pundits, we’ve already been written off.

“Zero depth. 20th place. A guaranteed six points.”

We’ve been underestimated from day one. But if there’s one thing this club and this city know how to do, it’s turn being underestimated into fuel. Hull has never been built on easy rides, hype, or media consensus it’s built on graft, resilience, and an uncompromising refusal to know our place.

Above all, it’s about enjoying being there. We earned the right to soak in the atmosphere, and measure ourselves against the very best. Playing without fear and soaking in every single moment of this stage is where the real magic happens and I’ll be there cheering them on every step of the way.

It’s also an incredible opportunity for the @tigerstrustofficial with the spotlight of the top flight isn’t just about what happens on the pitch; it amplifies the transformative work being done in our local communities, inspiring the next generation across Hull and East Yorkshire when all eyes are on us.

Football isn’t played on a spreadsheet, a podcast or won in a studio preview. It’s won on by teams who embrace the journey, contol the controllables, not give in and turn doubt into an unstoppable drive.

Let them underestimate us.

We’re here, we’re going to enjoy every second of it and the pressure is entirely on everyone else.

Up the Tigers. 🐅 @acunilicali

Turning 45 in a few weeks means stepping into a new running age category.

Is it getting harder? At times, absolutely. The recovery takes longer, the early alarm hits a bit harder, and the temptation to say “I’m just getting older” is always waiting.

It’s easy to fall into the mental trap that age means you can’t do it anymore. But progress isn’t about perfection; it’s about consistency and showing up especially on the days you don’t feel like it. A line from @bradstulberg latest book which is exceptional.

My @whoop clocking my fitness age at 36 is a nice metric, but @ryanholiday Holiday put it best: “Everything is a lagging indicator.”

Your physical condition today is simply the delayed result of every run you logged, every early night and every time you laced up when it would have been easier to stay on the couch. The biggest breakthrough hasn’t been physical, though it’s mindset. I’ve completely flipped the narrative: it’s no longer I have to do this.” It’s I get-to do this.

Movement is a privilege. Being physically fit keeps you mentally sharper, more resilient and ready for whatever life throws at you. You don’t stop running because you get old; you get old because you stop running.

Put in the work today.
Show up when it’s hard.
Your future self will collect the interest.

South Cave 10k

After a relentless academic year and a non-stop end to term, just getting to the start line today was going to take some serious grit.

It wasn’t pretty, and it certainly wasn’t easy especially battling the wind. But head down, dig deep, and get the job done. Managed to cross the line in 37:54!

That’s what I love about running with the @eyroadrunners under the guidance of @runperformancelab who not only sponsored the race but supported so many runners to great runs and PBs on the day. No matter how tough the day or the weather, everyone gets stuck in and gets each other over the line.

A timely reminder from @stevemagness as the dust settles on a busy few months:

“Keep things in perspective. No one really cares how fast or slow you run in circles, or whether you published in some magazine or not. The only people who truly care, will be there even if you fail at all of those things. The people who leave, don’t really matter.”

Times, splits, and tough conditions fade, but perspective stays.
Time now to completely switch off, reset, and get fitter!

Well done to @oliver.donkin @becky_briggs_nrg on taking the wins. Top running by @abbie_bucks on a shiny new PB that was never in doubt based on the training. And the pressure of pacing but @leehammond16 nailed it 🙌

My run of the day goes to @della_hatfield_run it takes bravery, courage and vulnerability to put yourself back on the line after so much time out. Huge respect ✊ @alecgibbo also returned this week as well!
