“The Art of Being Small.”
An image captured at Cape Leeuwin is the southwestern most tip of the Australian mainland, located in Western Australia near the town of Augusta and roughly 40 minutes south of Margaret River. Convergence of Oceans: It is widely recognized as the point where the Indian Ocean and the Southern Ocean meet, creating a wild, turbulent, and dramatic marine environment. #visitwesternaustralia #canoncollective taken in Cape Leeuwin by @stephenfinkel

Meet Bille Bob, one of the incredible wooden giants created by Danish recycled artist Thomas Dambo.

Part of the Giants of Mandurah exhibition in Western Australia, Bille Bob is a little different. He’s the only lost giant located outside the Mandurah region, adding another adventure to the search.

I love how Dambo transforms discarded materials into these larger-than-life characters, each with its own personality and story.

From a photography perspective, the challenge is finding a composition that captures both the giant’s character and its place in the landscape.

Another great example of creativity, curiosity and seeing possibilities in things others might throw away.#giantsofmandurah #canoncollective #visitwesternaustralia taken in Subiaco, Western Australia by @stephenfinkel

Another incredible creation from Danish recycled artist Thomas Dambo, Seba’s Song is one of the giant wooden sculptures hidden around Mandurah in Western Australia.

Part of the amazing Giants of Mandurah outdoor exhibition, these larger-than-life characters are created using recycled materials, each with its own personality and story to tell.

What I love about these giants is that they’re not simply artworks on display. They’re an invitation to get outdoors, explore the landscape and discover something unexpected along the way.

There’s also an important message behind the fun, encouraging us to think about our impact on the environment, conservation and how discarded materials can be given a completely new life.

And of course, they’re fantastic subjects to photograph! I love how the sculptures become part of the landscape, giving you endless opportunities to experiment with composition, scale, light and perspective.

A wonderful combination of creativity, sustainability, storytelling and photography. Best of all, it’s a free experience for everyone to enjoy #giantsofmandurah #canoncollective #visitwesternaustralia taken in Mandurah, Western Australia by @stephenfinkel

Perched high above the ocean, surrounded by a beautiful carpet of wildflowers, sits Santi Ikto, another of Thomas Dambo’s incredible giant sculptures.

Standing an impressive 7 metres tall, this gentle giant sits cross-legged, with his bushy beard and arms stretched towards the sky.

The story goes that Santi Ikto is asking the sun to evaporate the seawater, creating rain clouds that will drift across the land and help everything grow.

I love the imagination and storytelling behind these creations. And from a photography perspective, what a fantastic subject, with the giant sitting amongst the wildflowers and the ocean stretching out behind him. So many possibilities to capture something special from different angles and perspectives.

A wonderful combination of art, nature and a little bit of magic! #giantsofmandurah #canoncollective #visitwesternaustralia taken in Halls Head by @stephenfinkel

Down on the Coodanup foreshore in Mandurah, you’ll find the latest amazing creation from world-renowned Danish recycled artist Thomas Dambo.

The new giant, named Yaburgurt Cirkelstone, sits on the traditional lands of the Bindjareb Noongar people and was named in honour of a respected local Elder, in consultation with Bindjareb Elders.

Built with the help of the local community, this incredible creation replaces Vivi Cirkelstone, which was sadly destroyed by arsonists in December last year.

As someone who loves creating art from recycled materials, I have a real appreciation for the imagination, creativity and work that goes into something like this.

And of course, from a photography perspective, what a fantastic subject! The scale, textures, shapes and the way the sculpture sits within the surrounding landscape offer so many creative possibilities. It’s the sort of place where you could spend hours exploring different angles, playing with light and discovering new compositions.

For me, photography is about being curious, looking beyond the obvious and finding something special to capture. It’s not always about taking the same photograph everyone else takes, but finding your own way of seeing things.

I also love the story behind this giant. A community coming together to create something positive after such a disappointing act of destruction.

Art inspires photography, photography helps tell the story of art, and both have the power to bring people together.

If you’re ever in Mandurah, this is certainly worth adding to your list of places to explore with your camera! #giantsofmandurah #canoncollective #visitwesternaustralia taken in Coodanup Foreshore by @stephenfinkel
