Where the Light Begins...

"Perhaps our eyes will finally open in ancient recognition, willingly dazzled, illuminated at last. Perhaps this day the light begins in us." Jan Richardson, from the poem Circle of Grace

Three new images from the Tetons...I seem to be a bit enamored with these black and white conversions. I've been exploring this more and more with the processing of my images, and I'm loving the luminous lines of light shining through the dark.

Image 1 made as an ME ICM during a solo outing to Cattleman's Bridge the day before the Out of Chicago Grand Teton conference began. Image 2 is a single exposure ICM of Aspens made during a scouting trip ahead of the conference. Image 3 is an ME ICM made during a sunrise outing at Oxbow Bend ahead of the conference.

Just as I've not done many B&W conversions with more traditional landscape images, I've rarely explored converting my ICMs and ME ICMs to B&W...but, I find these exciting...with a bit of help from Nik Silver Efex and TK Luminosity Masks while processing.

I'll be heading to Mexico soon for my Art of Abstraction workshop in San Miguel, but I'm hoping to process a few more Teton images before I leave.

Primal Gestures from within...

"When I'm ready to make a photograph, I think I quite obviously see in my minds eye something that is not literally there in the true meaning of the word. I'm interested in something which is built up from within, rather than just extracted from without." ~ Ansel Adams

As I always do, I spent a few days exploring the Tetons ahead of the Out of Chicago Grand Teton conference, and I had the fortunate opportunity to do some scouting with David Cobb, who was also one of the instructors for the Creative Track during the conference. The first evening, we were exploring small scenes in the marshy wetlands at the Jackson Lake Dam Overlook area when I looked up and was enamored by the light rays pouring into the scene from the settting sun behind Mount Moran.

I immediately began playing with multiple exposure ICMs, using bright blend mode and flipping the camera upside down for the second exposure. This approach enabled me to show the beautiful flow of light rays in a uniquely different way. Not your average Mount Moran image here...but something that reflects more the grandeur and majesty I felt in this particular moment.

Something Unexpected This Way Comes...

"We are cups, constantly and quietly being filled. The trick is, knowing how to tip ourselves over and let the beautiful stuff out." ~ Ray Bradbury

When I traveled to the Tetons a couple of weeks ago for the Out of Chicago Grand Teton conference, I did not expect to find myself drawn to making more traditional images of the landscape than I've been accustomed to for nearly ten years now...but I was, and I did.

I've traveled a lot of places over the past several years, and I've never found it difficult to create using my usual ICM and multiple exposure techniques...but the Tetons in all their splendid glory challenged me in that regard. I found myself wanting...needing...to see, to make, and to experience the landscape there differently, and as a result I have a lot of new images that are quite different than what I've become known for.

I've spent more than a week on and off with these three images...working with my processing of them to be sure they say what I want them to say. I have hundreds more images from the Tetons to sort through, but this particular morning was so spectacular and memorable that I immediately went straight to the images made that morning, and because I wanted to be sure I was doing these three images justice with my conversion, especially because black & white is a new way of seeing for me, I've wanted to take my time with them.

The journey of my creative evolution continues...with more to come.

Something of the Marvelous...

"In all things of nature there is something of the marvelous." ~ Aristotle

These Japanese Anenomes are from Longwood Gardens back in August and were inspired by @suebishopphotos.

During my time ahead of the Out of Chicago Grand Teton conference, I made a lot of new images that I'm looking forward to revisiting and processing once I'm home.

For now, I hope these tiny flowers bring a bit of brightness and joy to your day.
