View our latest episode of “A Portrait of the Artist” with Australian artist Stephanie Monteith! We were thrilled to work with @elderlad to capture the incredible vegetation, golden hues, and lush greens of the Australian landscape. It is the diverse vegetation and shifting light unique to her native environment that influences Monteith’s magnificent paintings.

Stephanie and her family are currently on a flight to New York to join us for tomorrow night’s opening night for the group exhibition, “I Was Carefree, Green and Golden” with @joana.galego and @antoniac.art

Join us tomorrow evening from 6-8 pm to celebrate these wonderful artists 🥂✨

2026 23rd Annual National Acquisitive $30,000 Paddo Painting Prize Finalist

Stephanie Monteith

The Kitchen Window, 2026

Oil on linen
107 × 92 cm

For Sale
AUD $9,900

“The Kitchen Window” was painted in Tumut which is a small country town located on the traditional lands of the Wiradjuri, Wolgalu and Ngunnawal people, in the north-west foothills of the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales. From inside the house (with the electric jug sometimes boiling), I painted one of my dogs in the backyard illuminated with sunlight and the colours it made. I enjoy painting from direct observation, and I am interested in capturing the variety of light effects on the world as I observe it.

Artist Bio

Through painting and drawing Stephanie Monteith investigates the intersections of the human with the non-human. By observing objects, spaces, landscapes and people or other animals and their interactions with one another, Monteith looks for the wonder and interconnectedness of life. She seeks an expression of truth revealed through observation.

Fun fact: As well as collecting art, Isabella Stewart Gardner (the pioneering American art collector and philanthropist who opened her museum in Boston in 1903) had a passion for orchids. During the coldest months of the year, a celebrated collection of tropical plants adorns the Courtyard of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, among them Cymbidium orchids.

Indigenous to parts of Asia and Australia, these flowers have long been associated with virtue, purity, and enduring friendship, and have been thought to have healing properties.

This painting by @stephmonteith titled “Patterned Silk” features Cymbdium orchids paired with Mexican bush sage (the dark purple blooms). Known for its resilience, Mexican bush sage thrives in harsh conditions while flowering vividly, and is often associated with longevity and healing.

This painting is part of Stephanie’s show “Wild Flower” – a collection of works featuring arrangements of different flora species from across Australia. The show is up through tomorrow at our Tribeca location 🌷

Have you heard of tall poppy syndrome? In Australia and New Zealand, the phrase “cutting down the tall poppy” describes the tendency to criticize or diminish those who stand out for their success. It can take the form of subtle social pressure or more overt acts such as gossip, belittling, or ridicule, aimed at bringing individuals back in line with the group.

The poppy carries layered symbolism. It is most commonly associated with remembrance and sacrifice, most notably in relation to the fallen soldiers of World War I in the fields of Flanders. Beyond this, it has long signified consolation, fertility, death and rebirth, with roots in ancient Greek myths of Ceres and Demeter.

@stephmonteith “Poppies” depicts three stages of the flamboyant opium poppy in bloom. In Australia, particularly Tasmania, the cultivation of opium poppy is highly regulated, with the country producing over half of the world’s medicinal opiates.

“Poppies” is part of Stephanie Monteith’s exhibition “Wild Flower” in Tribeca—a collection of works depicting different flora species from across Australia.

“Wild Flower” is on view through May 16 at 39 Lispenard Street in Tribeca, New York 🌷 taken in Isabel Sullivan Gallery by @stephmonteith
