In 2018 I knew nothing about automotive marketing, but I knew I wanted to learn.
ㅤ
Fast forward to today and my agency makes high performance creative for multiple 9-figure auto brands.
ㅤ
And the greatest part? Our ad strategies print them money.
ㅤ
But it didn't start that way. We had to learn how to:
ㅤ
→ Write ads that actually make money
→ Develop campaign strategies that scale auto brands
→ Do it over and over again
ㅤ
Most of this we had to learn the hard way. Why?
ㅤ
There is great content on marketing. There is great content on cars. There is almost nothing on both.
ㅤ
So I created Pace Notes for YOU.
ㅤ
A free newsletter on what's working in automotive advertising right now.
ㅤ
Inside you'll get:
1️⃣ Insider looks on winning campaigns, and why they worked
2️⃣ Case studies from some of the biggest brands in the game
3️⃣ Tactical playbooks you can run on your own this week
ㅤ
This is the stuff AI can't teach you, yet it's 100% free.
ㅤ
Find it in my bio!

PS - If anyone knows how to forward this newsletter to my younger self, please let me know. by @sterling_voth

Honda once made an ad for the Civic Type R that was literally two ads at the same time.
ㅤ
Not two spots in a series.
ㅤ
Two ads playing on top of each other in the same video.
ㅤ
They called it The Other Side.
ㅤ
The story followed one man living a double life:
ㅤ
caring father during the day,
ㅤ
and wild getaway driver at night.
ㅤ
But here’s the part no one saw coming.
ㅤ
Honda worked with YouTube to build a custom feature that let viewers press the R key to instantly switch between the two versions of the ad.
ㅤ
One tap, and the tone flipped.
ㅤ
Why do this?
ㅤ
Because Honda wanted to prove the Civic Type R was both things at once. A real performance car, but still a Civic you could live with every day.
ㅤ
When the campaign launched alongside print and cinema, it blew people’s minds.
ㅤ
The ad won awards from Cannes Lions, The One Show, British Arrows, and Auto Express. But the most impressive stat wasn’t the trophies.
ㅤ
Viewers were spending over three minutes actively interacting with the ad.
ㅤ
That’s an eternity in digital advertising.
ㅤ
And that’s the real lesson.
ㅤ
People see thousands of ads every day.
ㅤ
But when you break expectations and give them something they’ve never seen before, you don’t just get attention. You get engagement.
ㅤ
That’s how great advertising sticks. by @sterling_voth

You don’t actually have to pay for good automotive ads. Done right, they pay for themselves.

Meta and Google don’t charge a flat rate. Their auctions weigh how likely people are to act on your ad. So when your ad is weak, Meta has to work harder to find each buyer, your cost per sale climbs, and you’re left with less money for ads.

The opposite is also true. A strong ad gets more people to act, your CPA drops, and every dollar buys more sales. Per Nielsen, creative drives 56% of the sales lift on digital campaigns.

Here’s the math. Imagine two brands, both making $250K a month. Brand A spends $30K on creative and only needs $50K in ad spend. Brand B spends $10K on creative and $100K on ad spend. Brand A saves $30K a month, and its ads build the brand instead of cheapening it.

I've been asked my take on AI ads a few times now, so here's some yapping I recorded on my drive.

The most famous car ever built was only offered in one color.
ㅤ
Black.
ㅤ
But what most people don't know is it didn't actually start that way.
ㅤ
See when @ford started building the Model T in 1908, it actually came in red, gray, green, and blue.
ㅤ
But when they opened their state of the art assembly line in 1914, suddenly they only offered black.
ㅤ
Ford's new assembly line was actually so good, it turns out the slowest part of the process was literally watching paint dry.
ㅤ
So they developed a new paint formula that dried more quickly, and since it only came in black, they didn't have to keep track of multiple colors. This made production even quicker.
ㅤ
The Highland Park assembly plant brought production times down from twelve and a half hours per car, to ninety three minutes.
ㅤ
Since the Model T was now cheaper and faster to make, Ford could build more than anyone else. In fact they made two million Model Ts in 1923 alone.
ㅤ
Which to this day holds the record for the highest annual production run for any car ever.
