Renovations always pose greater challenges than new construction. And designing a modern addition to an historic home presents its own demands. A thorough understanding of the existing building and the site is a critical first step to unearthing the potential that a property has to offer – it requires finding the right balance between old and new.

In this Cambridge, MA project, we meticulously restored the original residence and designed a warm, modern addition. The Corten steel panels complement the existing brick and stone masonry of the original house.

Perched on a rocky outcropping in Winchester, MA, this home was designed to blend the minimalist aesthetic of classic modernism with the vernacular forms of New England.

A demolition delay could have derailed this Wellesley project—but instead, it inspired one of MetroWest’s most inventive homes. Rather than tearing down the 1930s Colonial, this team served its historic core and wrapped it in a striking contemporary addition, creating a home that seamlessly bridges past and present.

Inside, a dramatic steel-and-glass staircase floods the interiors with light, while walls of glass, warm oak millwork, and richly veined stone keep the modern spaces feeling inviting. Outside, the transformation continues with a hillside pool, rooftop deck, tennis court, and lush gardens that make the most of every inch of the challenging site. As Stern puts it, “The mission became... How do we do that and still get the house we want?” 🏡✨🌿

A wood rain screen, large windows, zinc and reclaimed granite — timeless materials contribute to every gesture. Here a stone walk bridges a long rain garden in the approach to the guest cottage at our Newport Modern project.

A stair is a necessity – to connect one floor of living area to another. Our goal is to transform necessities into beautiful things. We believe in “giving artful expression to everyday needs” and stairs are the perfect example of this. Stairs for us are an opportunity for expression – where a very precise set of rules for ease of use and safety can be molded into something magical.

Each stair, like the homes they serve, can have a distinct personality – from open, modern and light to more enclosed and more traditional. The location and configuration of the stair is one of the key elements to consider when designing a multi-storied home – they define pathways and create connections; they’re like magnets joining together disparate areas of the home. by @sternmccafferty

A swimming pool in New England? It’s a short season but some benefits are year-long. A pool is a landscape element that can add structure and beauty to a garden. The calm simplicity of a well-designed pool belies a highly technical undertaking, requiring exact planning and detailed engineering. As always, we strive for an elegance in design characterized by modesty and integrity.

Garden rooms are an extension of the home and places of tranquility. It’s important to consider how a home connects with the garden; outdoor living spaces allow the homeowner a sense of enclosure and a meaningful connection to nature. In every project we design there is a garden room – from tightly structured urban courtyards in Boston’s historic Beacon Hill, to South End rowhouses, suburban estates and historic Cambridge homes.

David Stern was invited to join a panel discussion sponsored by Boston Home Magazine. The topic was a “the thoughtful renovation of older homes and the evolving relationship between architecture, interiors and setting.” This is a subject close to our hearts. by @sternmccafferty
