Revitalise 2026 was such a great event.... and its always nice to draw Steph in comps AND get a song we both know 🤣
On a side note: What an incredible venue... stunning.
Thank you Brady and Janine and all the Melbourne crew including Chris and Jackie, for making the event such a joy to attend. by @stevefitzlive

I've learned so much from Robert through what he shares online plus what has also passed from his many students down to me. It's awesome to have finally met him in person.

Training day 06 '26.
This dance is 100% improvised, to a song we had never heard before by choosing random on a new Spotify playlist I found.
It was the end of a packed training day, where we had been learning/revising/refining technique - we had a wrap-up dance before this, but were both in our head, thinking about what we'd been training.

So we decided to have another dance. Right before we started we said to clear our minds, don't think, just focus on the music, each other and our own body.. To FEEL instead of THINKING as I've been instructed by my coach Semion. This is a technique we call 'Dancing as One' where Music, Partners & Our Own Bodies work together equally.

It's challenging to get to that point - because it's very easy to focus on only one or two things at once. It's so easy to be thinking as well while you dance. Thinking about what to lead... thinking about how to style through movement, thinking about so many techniques as they come up. But dance is about feeling. Feeling the music. Feeling your own body move. Feeling the connection and partners movement.

I loved this dance for that reason. It's not perfect - we're amatuer dancers. But we attained our goal - Dancing as One. That's what made this dance so great in the moment. We'd pushed out the distractions and were able to give our attention to the partnership and music - even if it is only 3 minutes long.

I'm a self-taught solo dancer.

My relatives tell me that even as a toddler, I would walk into a room where they were, do a dance, they'd applause, then I'd walk off and do something else...

I can't tell you why that is. It's something in me about being creative, being in the music, and the movement.

Solo dancing was my beginnings. I've always loved it. I got hooked on Rap the day I saw Michael Jackson moonwalk. Then added Break Dancing, then Hip-Hop, to Techno and ultimately what I used to call freestyle dancing which was blending them all together.
The first lesson I took as a dancer was when I was 19 and I did Jazz Ballet for 4 weeks. Everything else was self taught - figuring it out. Watching TV for music film clips to learn as much as I could.

I'd train for 2-3 hours a day as a teenager. I'd put music on and dance in the lounge room. If my mum came home, I'd go in my bedroom and keep dancing.

But now I partner dance. Which has even more complexities and challenges. West Coast Swing is remarkably simple, but also incredibly complex and filled with so much variety.

I often think, 'go to a hip hop class' - but time is limited. My body is so much older now. And if I'm being brutally honest with you, I've climbed that mountain before.
When I was 19 I was considered one of the top 2 or 3 dancers in Perth for that style. Do I really want to climb that same hill?

Mixing solo training with partner training is a great balance. I still have no idea how to put any of my solo movement into #westcoastswing - except for some very infrequent movement.

Figuring how to make the dance my own - adding my own personality, while still learning and evolving from so many amazing teachers - is what drives me. It keeps me interested, occupies my mind - and lets face the reality that I'm also not getting any younger.

I wish I could dance all day. Spend my time figuring it out. Creating something interesting. Sharing my passion with others.
I was a Pro hip-hop dancer when I was 19. Performing, teaching. But that career was short lived as it didn't pay the bills.
Now, I dance for the love of it. It's still my flow state.
Does that make me weird?

Applying lessons from Semion to move away our centre from the point of connection adds a lot to the feel (and look) of the dance.
If you have trained these concepts before, what worked for you in getting the techniques into your body (leader or follower)?

I've been thinking a lot about video reviews in general, especially since Tim Crombie made his comments about how he has (like most of us) often found it difficult to watch ourselves dance (on the Level Up WCS Podcast)
I think that comes mostly from a critical eye - where we are actively looking for things that didn't work or we aren't executing where/how we would like.
So I'm sharing this video, and some of my thoughts around it.
For context, this is the Intermediate Strictly competition at Asia Open this year and to a song I'm less familiar with (which is why the start was not good). I'm dancing with @bunnylysis, who asked me to partner with her - also noting Estelle hasn't danced for a long time due to starting her family. The last time we danced, before this dance was 2-3 years ago - we tried to catch up the night before but couldn't find each other in the crowd 🫠
In this dance, I can see moments where I go off time - which bothers me. I can see moments where my lead wasn't clear. I can see where I missed musical opportunities and not expressing the music fully in my body. I can see where I'm pulsing the 1 and not the 2.
BUT...
In comparison to Asia Open 2025 - I can see a lot of improvement in my dancing - specifically around areas I've been focused on improving.
The major adjustment which you cannot see, is my ability to adapt to dancing how the Singaporeans dance, which is different to how we dance at home - something I really struggled with last year. Also concepts like 'feeling, not thinking' - moving away from 'pattern after pattern' and instead embracing 'flow and feeling'. I can see me paying attention to Estelles centre of gravity in our movement. I can see patience in areas where I wouldn't have previously waited for my followers attention to come back to me. I can see more 'improv' moments and creating space. I can see us hitting phrase changes and musical moments more clearly.
So while watching videos can be a challenge - I'd encourage you to record your dances and review with both a critical and positive eye. If you begin to do this, year after year you'll begin to spot your growth and see the improvements you've made along your journey. by @stevefitzlive
