After packing up my summer studio, I'm left with the empty studio. I've always been fascinated by the relationship between the studio and the work.

I hope you can come in two weeks to see some of that work at Gowanus Open Studios, October 17 and 18th (12-6; 575 Union). by @stevehicksstudio

"When something is finished, that means it's dead, doesn't it?... I never finish a painting – I just stop working on it for a while … The thing to do is always to keep starting to paint, never finishing painting." -Gorky

I began this painting six years ago during Covid. I never put it in my racks - it just patiently and persistently sat against the wall more or less for six years waiting.
I had fun in the last two weeks working with it. It's nice to circle back

These are a group of still lives I made way back in the olden days that also didn't make the cut (of my talk, "Not Knowing," tomorrow - saturday). I named the series "Pairs" because I would quickly find two hopefully unrelated things in the studio and put them on the same shelf and paint them more or less in the same light. I tend to like diptychs (more than triptychs) and pairs of things because they're naturally a little divisive.

These were nice, straightforward paintings - never really saw the light of day. Notice the first one is a self portrait. All 12 x 12".

Come to mine and Emily Feinstein's talk about our work:
Saturday, September 19, 3-5:30 pm
New York Irish Center, 1040 Jackson Ave. LIC

I've had the task of reducing 350+ images of my work over the past 35 years to well less than 100. Among many other images, I'm disappointed not to have room for these drawings of myself, so I'm dumping them here so they at least have some life.

Despite the changes my paintings have gone through, my drawings have stayed more or less consistent during that time and have served as a sort of anchor for my other work. I drew long before I began painting. I've always liked my naturally messy line but, more importantly, what goes through my head when I draw from observation. What the hell is the line refering to or describing anyway? Luckily I'll never know.

I've titled my talk "Not Knowing"

i'm going through a lot of files of old drawings and paintings to prepare for a talk I'm giving about my work next month. It a little overwhelming. I'm finding things that I totally forgot about. To get them off my chest and out of my talk, I will probably post many of these in the near future.

This is a painting I made of Marika 35 years ago. Jane Freilicher lent me her NYC rooftop greenhouse studio for the summer. By noon, it was unbearably hot. I'm sure I was thinking of Bellini and Titian paintings when I composed it. I remember being dissatisfied by it… maybe thinking it was over-designed. I quickly lost track of it and it's long gone. by @stevehicksstudio

I've been drawing my dog, Chance, a lot this summer.

He doesn't necessarily sit still, but sometimes he does. This is payback for something I liked to do when I taught drawing: I would tell the model to vary the length of the poses randomly so they could be either 20 seconds or 20 minutes. I wanted to break the habit of gesture, then increasingly longer drawings. More importantly, I did this because I loved the counel I received at the Studio School to make every mark as if it was your last stroke (viz. Nickson & Shemesh). It's an intense way to work: only do what needs to be done NOW (no planning ahead).

Also, Chance has an extraordinary radiation wound on his left cheek (which I've attend to several times a day for a year) that is slowly killing him, and I love him. So there's that. by @stevehicksstudio
