THIS WEEK ➡️ . Day by day, there are new breakthroughs to discover, new challenges to encounter, and always tackled with a focus on making progress of some kind……… Remember that the smallest wins count too 💪🏽 . Excited for work to continue next week at the @royalballetandopera on the MCRAE x VASSILEV PROJECT 🕺🏼🎻💃🎹 by @stevenmcrae_
It's time to dance, but... “what if I actually can't dance anymore?” Royal Ballet principal dancer Steven McRae experienced the 'worst injury a dancer can have' when his Achilles snapped on stage at a packed Royal Opera House. Having never stepped foot inside a gym before his injury, his head telling him, "the gym will make you bulky... the gym is not for dancers", McRae dedicated himself to a gruelling rehab programme. @steph7carrel's remarkable film, Dancing Back to the Light, is an honest account of McRae's fight to regain control of his destiny and return to professional ballet. 📺  Steven McRae: Dancing Back to the Light is on #iplayer now. #ballet #royalballet #stevenmcrae #sportsinjury #bbc #bbciplayer #dance #classicalballet by @stevenmcrae_
MANON ACT 3 . 💡Fun fact: It was watching this final pas de deux of Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s ‘Manon’ that flicked a switch inside me as a young teenager & made me want to pursue Ballet & Dance as a career - This ballet will forever hold a special place in my heart for multiple reasons and to be able to return to this incredible ballet this week alongside the amazing Sarah Lamb was very overwhelming in all the right ways! . Shows 7th, 11th & 25th November @royalballetandopera . 📸 Captured this week by @dancersdiary 👩‍🏫 Coach @leannebenjamin_official . #ballet #dance #partnership #journey by @stevenmcrae_
TODAY WAS A MOMENT . Almost 7 years ago to the day, I took off for a jump in the middle of Act 2 Manon and in front of a full @royalballetandopera auditorium I snapped my Achilles tendon…… Well, TODAY, after not only recovering from the Achilles but then having to tend with a full ACL, Lateral Ligament and Meniscus reconstruction (knee), I completed a full run through of Manon on stage! . Of course it was by no means perfect, nor was it perfect when I performed it before any major injuries, but I believe today represents a feeling of hope and confidence for future generations of Dancers that their careers, their time on stage and thus the ability to continue evolving as artists, is now protected thanks to the gradual (still very slow) implementation of Sports Science research and development within our art form! . Alongside the wonderful Sarah Lamb, & our coach @leannebenjamin_official (Leanne has lived this entire journey with me from the night of my Achilles nightmare), we will now get back to work in the studio to continue preparing for our performances in 2 weeks time - November 7th, 11th & 25th! . 📸 Captured today post stage rehearsal processing an avalanche of emotions . Anything is possible! . #dance #ballet #hope . by @stevenmcrae_
NEW BOOTS . We are edging closer to our performances of Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s MANON at the @royalballetandopera November 7th, 11th & 25th…… And with that comes some new hand made Boots! . The level of detail in our productions are incredible with so much craftsmanship going into every layer of the performance……. But I’ll be honest, leather boots are not the easiest to move in 🫣 . Anything is Possible! . P.s: Thank you @tgdanceschool for the fun T-Shirt! . #dance #ballet #costume #design by @stevenmcrae_

HAPPY BIRTHDAY (this weekend) TO AN EXTRAORDINARY ARTIST! . Here’s to another year of sharing many magical moments on stage, in the studio and behind the scenes with the one and only Sarah Lamb who celebrates her birthday this weekend!! . This image, captured by @dancersdiary during rehearsals for the McRae / Vassilev Project at the @royalballetandopera illustrates Sarah’s beauty, bravery and strength that continues to inspire every generation! . Next up together is Manon, November 7th, 11th and 25th 🎟️ at the @royalballetandopera . #happybirthday #partnership #ballet by @stevenmcrae_
WORKING ON LEG STIFFNESS . In the world of Dance, ‘stiffness’ is not a quality that is generally encouraged or even taught…… Plyometric training such as the pogo jumps I am doing in this video, mimics what a lot of dance movements require when we are changing direction, increasing speed or looking for a particular dynamic…… . In the slow motion element of the clip, taken today during my session with Coach @gregor.rosenkranz, you can see the muscles begin to activate before my feet touch the ground in order to prepare, protect and propel into the next movement! . Anything is Possible! . #Dance #sportsscience #ballet #jumps by @stevenmcrae_
‘RESILIENCE IS A CHOICE - AND IT DOESN’T COME EASY’ My own quote from the McRae/Vassilev Project . The daily pursuit 💪🏽 . Anything is Possible! . #dance #ballet #resilience by @stevenmcrae_
BELIEVE - BELIEVE - BELIEVE . It is one of the greatest joys to be able to fly around the @royalballetandopera stage again and it is nothing short of a miracle that here I am, having fun on stage with Sarah Lamb, performing Danse Russe (choreographed by @prior_visual) from the McRae / Vassilev Project! . A year ago my medical team @royalballetandopera and I consulted with the British Olympic Medical Team to find a way through the challenges I was facing…… And if I am honest, I was starting to question just how much more anyone could do to improve my situation…… BUT what I have learnt from these past years is that you MUST HAVE FAITH in what you are doing and never stop believing!!!!! . I won’t sugar coat any of this, there is simply NO ONE that can do the work for you and this result hasn’t just happened by luck…… BUT when you love something hard enough you will FIGHT to protect it! . One more performance tonight before the build up to Manon next Month - Show Dates: November 7th, 11th & 25th . Anything is Possible! . #Dance #ballet #determination #resilience by @stevenmcrae_
A NIGHT TO CELEBRATE . Last night we celebrated 100 YEARS of the @royalballetschool at a wonderful Gala Dinner highlighting the past, present and future of an organisation that has helped shape the world of Dance today….. . It is thanks to the late Gailene Stock, former Director of The Royal Ballet School, that I even ended up living, training, building a career and creating the beautiful little family that we have today in London……. My beautiful wife @elizabethjmcrae and I met at the school when I was partnered with Elizabeth in Pas de Deux Class!!! . I thank Gailene everyday for having the courage to take a chance on me and for supporting me through what was the most overwhelming, life changing experience at such a young age……… When we say that Dance has ‘transformative’ powers, I truly believe it…… And it is thanks to people like Gailene and the many passionate Directors, Teachers, Coaches and other staff around the world that instil their faith within the dancers they support that enable extraordinary journeys to unfold! . Congratulations @royalballetschool and here’s to the next 100 years 🕺🏼💃❤️ . Anything is Possible! . #dance #ballet #journey by @stevenmcrae_
