That’s me! The top photo, taken by the one and only @jbk_photos back in 1987 out at Rose Avenue in Venice.
Next year, it will be 40 years since this photo was taken! What a cool thing to share with a friend that you grew up with 💙

Josh was literally the only person back in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s who had a camera and was documenting all the wild stuff that was happening in our neighborhood. If you haven’t seen his collections of incredible photographs, please take a look!

Very honored to be part of his documentary journey! Thanks Josh!!!

Hawthorne is and always will be the original King of our Compound. He single-handedly set up the program that protects us all here on the compound. He passed it down to Washington and now it is Washington’s turn to pass it down. Welcome to the school of hard knocks Xena!!! 💙#malinioslovers taken in Los Angeles, California by @stevesiegrist

Gustavo. What can we say…

When our family move to Portugal 12 years ago, it was a big change and adjusting to life in a new country was not easy. But then we found you outside of our first apartment in Boavista, and with you - Portugal quickly started to feel like home.

You sat on your own chair at every dinner party, paid attention to every conversation, and laid on everybody’s lap whether they liked it or not. You would sit out on the front balcony and talk to (or at) the neighbors across the street and to anyone who was passing by.

You were living proof that big things can and do come in small packages. Or at least, that’s how you lived your life. You were comfortable and confident no matter where we traveled with you. When on the airplane to LA, you sat in your seat with more politeness and civility than most people I know. Never complaining, not even once. Ever.

It would be disingenuous if I didn’t bring up the fact that you did have - at times - a little bit of an attitude problem. You would prefer to chase Renée around the apartment and attack her, rather than a cat toy. (See attached video) and if we didn’t get out of bed by 6:30 AM to feed you, you would jump on the counter and toss our plates and cups on the floor. You broke more stuff than the Northridge earthquake. I never thought a day would come where I would miss that, but here we are.

You were Ethan’s lockdown partner through Covid, when we we stuck in LA and couldn’t be there. When the time came to finally bring you to Los Angeles you fit in immediately on The Compound. It only took you a few short weeks to announce your arrival in Tinseltown, when you were seen stylishly reposted on the @modernica IG account. (Attached)

For 10 years, and through all of our European adventures, you provided the international love that our family needed and we are forever grateful.

Your passing was unexpected and far too soon, but you will be cherished forever.

Grateful barely sums it up. But nonetheless, we are so grateful for all of the patience, understanding, and compassion that our clients extended to us and our crew this year. In many ways, 2025 was one of if not the hardest year in the 24 years that we have been designing and building landscapes.

Inflation, tariffs, and of course the fires were almost too much in and of themselves. But it was the unbelievably cruel immigration raids that made it, at times, impossible to work.

Thankfully, gratefully, we were working with some incredible clients. Clients who never complained about our ever shifting schedule, who understood when our bids were affected by an erratic tariff policy, and who always provided a safe and comfortable place for the crew to work without fear and with dignity. An example of which you can see in the above video. At this project, the clients pumped classic 80s music through their new outdoor sound system so that our guys could have a little bit of fun while they worked ❤️‍🩹

The projects of 2025 came out great and we are very proud. Many of which I will be posting about soon! Starting with my website which is long overdue for an update.

We will be forever grateful. Thank you!

Now let’s vote our asses off in November and be finished with this MAGA nonsense once and for all ✊🏽

Hello! This is a project that we designed and installed last year in South Pasadena. Within 16 months we transformed this massive 5,000 square foot, water hungry lawn into a thriving native-friendly habitat.

Our clients were amazing, open minded, and more than ready to get their hands dirty! Check out the wood bridge that they built! 💪🏽

As usual, credit goes to our incredibly talented team for bringing these drawings to life ✊🏽✌🏽🌱🌸🌻🪻🌳🌿🍃🌵🌾🦋🐝

Thank you, truly thank you for all of the kind comments and support that everyone has sent in response to this post. It has been overwhelming! People from Spain, New Zealand, France, Australia, and of course every single state in our country. It’s been incredible. There were some good questions asked, some good conversations were had, and it was encouraging and uplifting ✊🏽✌🏽💙 and I want it to stay that way, so I’m turning off the comments.

Thank you, honestly!
Please vote your hearts out in the upcoming midterms! 🇺🇸 by @stevesiegrist

As much as I wanted to continue to post videos of how we build our gardens, it just doesn’t feel right in this particular climate, at least without standing up and sending my support for the people that make these gardens possible. Without them our city would be unrecognizable, and a lot less beautiful. Let us stand together, and we will get through this 💙 taken in Los Angeles, California by @stevesiegrist

We are starting off this new video series with a garden that we designed and built last year. I wanted to start off this series with a front yard “lawn conversion”, because it is the easiest and often most meaningful way to change your local environment.

Very few people in Southern California actually use their front yards. The amount of resources that is required to maintain a basic front lawn is pretty high. A lawn uses a tremendous amount of our scarce water supply. The mowers, blowers, and trucks used by the maintenance companies create more greenhouse gasses in the state of California than cars and traffic. (Think about that for a second) The excess runoff that flows off these lawns and into the street, then to the LA River, and finally into the ocean, carries excess fertilizers and pesticides with it.

When you add all of that up, its not good. Especially when instead we can have a California friendly, native garden. A garden that uses little to no water, that is fire-wise, that creates habit, provides food and shelter for birds, bees, lizards and so many other local animals… well it simply means that most of the front yards that you see in Southern California are nothing short of mini environment disasters.

The good news is that there is a simple, fast solution. In a short 10 months you can convert your unused front lawn into a thriving native garden like the one above!

Thank you to my amazing clients for trusting us with this project 👍🏼
