It's here: the special POCUS issue of Family Medicine.

The October issue of Family Medicine, a scholarly journal of STFM, is a theme edition covering the teaching of #POCUS in family medicine residency programs to prepare learners for using POCUS in the clinic: https://journals.stfm.org/familymedicine/2026/october/

The issue, “Teaching POCUS in Family Medicine,” builds on the work of the STFM POCUS Education Task Force, which brought together family medicine POCUS experts to develop recommendations and guidance for residency education. These feature articles aim to help residency programs and medical departments consider what the POCUS evolution means for learners, faculty, and clinical practice.

Other articles feature contributions from educators examining curriculum development, assessment, faculty development, and implementation, plus a guest editorial from American Board of Family Medicine President Warren Newton, MD, MPH: “Point-of-Care Ultrasound: A Trial for Our Specialty.”

“I hope this issue provides useful context for conversations within your department about how POCUS education and practice may continue to evolve across family medicine,” says Family Medicine Editor in Chief Sarina Schrager, MD, MS. “I am grateful to the STFM POCUS Task Force, our guest editors, authors, reviewers, and partner organizations whose work and collaboration made this special issue of Family Medicine possible.”

"A Consensus-Based Framework for POCUS Applications Tiering in Family Medicine Residency Education: A Study From the STFM POCUS Task Force" is the third of three special POCUS articles to be published in advance of the upcoming issue of Family Medicine. The full article is available on the journal website.

The use of point-of-care ultrasound (#POCUS) in family medicine has expanded significantly over the past decade. The breadth of potential POCUS applications in family medicine presents a major challenge for curricular prioritization.

To this end, the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) and the ABFM Foundation sponsored Project FOCUS (Finding Consensus for POCUS Standards in Family Medicine Education and Competency-Based Assessment) and formed the STFM POCUS Task Force. The Task Force identified 54 POCUS applications in which graduating family medicine residents should be competent. However, the Task Force recognized that simultaneously implementing all 54 applications would be unrealistic for many residency programs due to variability in faculty expertise, curricular time, equipment access, and institutional infrastructure.

A phased implementation framework was therefore needed to support scalable curricular adoption across programs at different stages of POCUS integration. This study aimed to establish a consensus-based tiering framework for integrating recommended POCUS applications into residency training.

STFM is hosting a webinar next month on tracks and areas of concentration in family medicine residencies! We hope to see you there (registration link in our bio).

Family medicine residencies are increasingly using tracks and areas of concentration (AOCs) to meet evolving learner interests, workforce demands, and community needs.

Panelists (James Schindler, MD, MPH, Thomas Bishop, PsyD, MA, Thomas Hahn, MD, Adrian Knauss, PhD, and Lynda Montgomery, MD) will discuss the history and growth of tracks/AOCs, how they are structured within 3-year programs, and the factors that have shaped their development. This webinar is for those seeking to better understand and apply these curricular approaches within their own programs. by @stfm_fm
