Congratulations to Dr. Andrea Soto Abarca, a third-year resident at UT Health San Antonio, for being awarded the TAFP Foundation’s Cassie Murphy-Cullen, PhD, Scholarship. The scholarship honors Dr. Murphy-Cullen’s many years of training residents in research by providing funding for Texas family medicine residents to present their research at national conferences. Dr. Abarca presented on the legacy of family medicine in underserved areas during the COVID-19 pandemic at STFM’s Annual Spring Conference in New Orleans.

In this joint editorial, editors of the seven US-based #FamilyMedicine journals underscore the evidence that a strong #PrimaryCare infrastructure is clearly related to improved health. They further argue that governments and health systems must invest in the primary care workforce to ensure high-quality primary care for the US population in the future.

Dr. Penwell representing NHFMRP at @stfm_fm in California! She presented a QI project turned research poster by Dr. Rebaza & Dr. Summers (alongside Drs. Penwell, Lawrence & Trout)! They worked to increase postpartum depression screenings among ALL parents (birthing, non-birthing, foster, caretakers etc) at all visits. By doing this, they increased screening of postpartum depression significantly and were therefore able to diagnose and treat PPD. This project encouraged more parents to talk about the mental health during visits and allowed for resident physicians to identify and support patients struggling with PPD. 💜
