A beautiful evening celebrating art at Miami Ironside!

Last night, Opa Projects welcomed guests for the opening reception of In a Landscape, a group exhibition co-curated by gallery founder Billy Tartour and artist Stephen Thorpe, who were there to welcome visitors.

Bringing together five artists, the exhibition explores landscapes through memory, imagination, and personal experience.

𝐉𝐨𝐢𝐧 𝐮𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐰, 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟖, 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝟔–𝟖 𝐏𝐌 for the opening in the presence of artist and co-curator @sthorpestudio .

Co-curated by Billy Tartour and Stephen Thorpe, the exhibition brings together five artists who approach landscape not simply as a place to be observed, but as something shaped by memory, imagination, and personal experience.

Borrowing its title from John Cage’s 1948 composition, In a Landscape explores the space between the world we see and the worlds we create.

After living in the Mojave Desert for the last year I was struck by its cavernous formations and the solid, layered rock, like natural architecture framing the sky. The interplay of light bouncing off these stone surfaces, shifting from deep shadows to vivid bursts of color. The intensity of this light, cascading through enclosed spaces, transforms even the most grounded spaces into something radiant

【Book Launch】Stephen Thorpe: On Corners ⛰️

Enter the beautifully uncanny world of Stephen Thorpe through On Corners, a new publication by Ora-Ora exploring the artist’s richly layered paintings and evolving visual language.

Known for his iconic “corner paintings,” Thorpe brings together Western painterly formalism and classical Chinese aesthetics in works that feel at once contemplative, tactile, and quietly surreal. Thick impasto walls, faded carpets, and delicately rendered birds converge within spaces suspended between memory, illusion, and material presence.

Featuring new texts and extensive images, On Corners offers an intimate look into the artist’s practice and philosophy.

Stephen Thorpe's second solo with the gallery opens next Friday, May 8th!⁠

Thorpe’s previous exhibition, Dream House, drew upon psychoanalytic frameworks which explore the architecture of the psyche through the motif of the domestic interior. Rooms and corners functioned as sites of containment and introspection, mapping the layered structure of consciousness and the unconscious. ⁠
⁠
In the upcoming show, these enclosed spaces give way to a more primal form of interiority: the cave. ⁠
⁠
No longer bound by constructed walls, Thorpe’s spaces are now hewn from the earth itself—ancient, geological, and expressing a deeper temporal resonance. This shift is both geographic and conceptual. ⁠
⁠
The Mojave Desert, with its vast expanses and stark topographies, has triggered a reorientation in Thorpe’s work, moving away from the psychological interior as a constructed space toward the landscape as a psychological condition. The desert becomes not merely a setting, but a field of perception—an arena in which the boundaries between inner and outer experience dissolve.⁠
