I customize sneakers for fun.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Bride of Frankenstein. That’s what I’m calling this one. Wanted to try out some new techniques and do something unique. Used a pink swooshless J1 (eBay find) as the base, then took spare parts from a Phantom Pine Green I had customized previously - swoosh, laced, insole. Now this is where stuff gets weird: I used a dremmel tool to sand, brush, and buff the heel tab and tip - basically turned into a soft suede texture. Then I cut the leather away from the sock liner on the quarters and toe box - then used the dremmel to lightly sand and brush them to clean them up nice and remove glue residue. Stitched the recycled green swoosh to the leather and sock liner, hand stitched some accents, and cut open the top of the vamp. At this point it still felt like it needed something. So I painted an asterisk on the heel and added the “*custom” to the inside quarters (using @angelusdirect green) - kind of a playful poke at Nike’s recent suits aimed at customizers. Painted “85” over the embossed tongue tag and called it a day. #customsneaker #customshoes #sneakerheads #sneakers by @stillgoodcustoms

J5 LANEY BLUE CUSTOM by @stillgoodcustoms. The grey midsole was painted black as well as the sock liner and the overall main body of the original blue shoe. Cross stitch on the side toe box, straight stitching on the side heel 3 yellow and 2 blue to represent #23. Lastly the jumpman on the back was changed to blue from black. by @stillgoodcustoms

The finishing touches to my new Off-White inspired Jordan 1 Swooshless lows, paying tribute to the great Virgil Abloh. Always loved this photo of Virgil doing his thing and just knew these insoles would be the perfect way to finish off this custom. Huge shout out to @reclusivesole for the amazing work. As a customizer, my favorite part is learning to do new things and keeping every step of the process in house. But I have tried many times to do my own insoles, and they’re always garbage. Reclusive Sole gets them perfect every single time. #offwhitenike #sneakerheads #customsneakers #customshoes #virgilabloh by @stillgoodcustoms

Fresh customs up! As a customizer I really like to breathe new life into beat up kicks. I find it much more satisfying to reuse a pair that might otherwise end up garbage, than to work on brand new shoes that someone could be wearing as is. This shoe is the perfect example. Bought a super beat pair of swooshless J1s off eBay for $30 (photo on last slide). Cut the leather panels away from the liner on the outside quarter and toe box - and painted them Cream from @angelusdirect mixed with their 2-Soft. Cut out the stitching out from the camp and the heel tab. New Off-White style swoosh, custom lettering on the inside quarter, outsole, and heel tab. Repainted all the white on the shoe. Replaced the tongue tag with brown suede. Pretty happy with the transformation! What you think? Better than the beat swooshless? #customshoes #offwhitejordan1 #shoecustomizer #sneakers #sneakerheads by @stillgoodcustoms

Story time. In 1993 my parents gave me my first pair of Jordans, the original Playoff 8s. I was 7 years old and I’m really not sure how they afforded them, but it ignited a love for sneakers that still burns today. I’m definitely not a sneakerhead, and certainly not a customizer, without those shoes. Fast forward 33 years. Today I was able to buy my little man a pair of the Chrome 8s for his 9th birthday. Not sure if he will appreciate the significance, but to me it’s a big moment. Sneakers are cool, the stories that go with them are even cooler. #itsthestoriesthatmatter #sneakerhead #nike #jordan8 @itsthestoriesthatmatter by @stillgoodcustoms

Fresh customs coming at you! If you’ve seen the @travisscott Moon Shoe for the cast of The Odessey (photo on last slide), these are my take on a J1 version. Took a Phantom Pine Green as the base and dyed the white with black suede dye from @angelusdirect. Then painted the inside swoosh with black paint mixed with duller, cut out a suede burgundy colored swoosh for the outside, subtly darkened the midsole with a grey stain from @foxtrott_uniform, painted the tongue tag and embroidered heel tab with a custom mix of raspberry, mauve, and rich brown. #sneakerheads #jordan1low #customshoes by @stillgoodcustoms

Another work in progress. Whipping up a blue version of my Nike Pacific custom - painting the edges with @angelusdirect Mustard, black on the swoosh and midsole, black with 2-Soft on the tongue and sock liner. Still need to paint the tongue tag and add some custom stitching details to make it more interesting. #customsneakers #nike #sneakerhead by @stillgoodcustoms

Almost decided against posting this one, as these things were pretty beat when I started. I coach high school football and wanted a shoe in school colors for the sideline - and didn’t want anything too nice because they would be worn hard out in the elements. So I bought a super beat up pair of Mystic Navy lows (photo on last slide) and restored them. Cleaned the whole shoe, reshaped the toe box, painted the whole shoe with @angelusdirect black, royal 5, and white, and cut a new reverse swoosh. This is by far the least amount of time I’ve ever spent on a custom. Part of the project was to see how fast I could do one. They’re far from perfect but it’ll work for their intended purpose. #jordan1low #customsneakers #sneakers #sneakerheads by @stillgoodcustoms

Story time. I haven’t been customizing long, but I’ve really fallen in love with it. I started out just painting on some shoes for my kids to get the feel of things, but I quickly realized I wanted to do more than just repaint sneakers. I wanted to be able to transform them and I wanted to find my own unique “voice” or style. This is the first pair I feel like I’m really doing that. I’m not just copying someone else’s design, but making my own. This started as a Phantom Pine Green. The first time I saw that shoe I knew I wanted to customize it. I love the gum outsole and the aged black leather, but didn’t really vibe with the rest of the shoe. So I painted the phantom panels with @angelusdirect Terra Cotta, the inside swoosh with black (mixed with duller), stained the midsole with a @foxtrott_uniform pen, stitched in some detail, and decided to go with a natural premium leather swoosh on the outside. Picked up some nice laces from @litlaces that matched the tone of the shoe. Last thing to do before it’s finished is add some custom embroidered tongue tags. by @stillgoodcustoms

Finished product (minus the laces). When I started playing around with making customs I was just painting shoes, which is cool, but I reached a point where I wanted to learn more and increase the difficulty. So I decided to tackle an Off-White style custom, but wanted to do more than add a logo and stencil “AIR” on it. This didn’t turn out perfect but I’m proud of the work that went into it. I bought a pair of Heritage highs that someone had started customizing and quit on (see the last slide). $35 @ebay find. Decided to go with the classic bred colorway. Painted them up with @angelusdirect paints, cut out a new side panel out of a faux velvet, deconstructed the collar and vamp, deconstructed the tongue and sock liner, relocated the tongue tag, stenciled on the midsole and inside quarter panel and inside the collar, made with my @cricut . It was fun and I learned a lot. Just waiting on the “Shoelaces” to come in. #offwhitenike #jordan1high #customsneakers #sneakers by @stillgoodcustoms

Finished product. So, I realize aging and distressing sneakers isn’t for everyone, and some people have strong feelings. But I really like the distressed look, so I wanted to give it a go. Started with a pair of University Reds, which you can get pretty cheap (think I paid $30 for a used pair on eBay). Started off by taking my exacto blade and scraping up (not cutting, brushing the blade against the leather) several spots, especially along the edges to make them more worn. Next I slightly cut the sock liner in a few places where it attaches to the shoe. Hit the whole shoe with acetone and then submerged them in a tub filled with coffee mixture for about 4 hours. Rinsed, dried, hit the edges with @foxtrott_uniform coffee edges pen, and then finished with @liquidkicksofficial flat. Along the way I tried to encourage a wider shape, more like the skateboard shoes I wore in high school. Anyways, I’m happy with how they turned out. #sneakers #sneakerheads #customsneakers by @stillgoodcustoms

Work in progress. I’m calling this WIP the “Mocha Low-Low”. It started as a Jordan 1 Mule Golf Baroque Brown. So far I’ve painted the white panels @angelusdirect Black (with a touch of duller), did a light midsole stain with a @foxtrott_uniform pen, removed the swoosh from the outside and replaced with a TS style swoosh, and painted the tongue tag red and white. Last step before the @liquidkicksofficial finisher is to add the Cactus Jack embroidered tags to the corner of the tongues. @cactusjack #jordangolf #sneakerhead #customsneakers #customshoes #travisscottjordan1 by @stillgoodcustoms
