Today brings St James Street Big Local officially to an end. We have one last project ‘Signs for Birds’, developed with local partners, to reveal in mid-late April so look out for that! Thank you to the many partners, volunteers, businesses and community groups who have been involved with us, some of whom feature in local film-maker John Renney’s film about St James Street Big Local’s work over the last 10 years.

Two years ago, we decided to commission a mural sign that reflected the St. James Street area’s social history and its multi-cultural identity.
Consulting with local expert residents @1littlegem , @lapsleyframeworks and @pendaltonpainter we were keen that the mural used the original colours and typography of the General Eastern Railway company which opened St. James Street Station in 1870.
Historically workers arrived at the station, the first in Walthamstow, from Ireland, South East Asia, the Balkans and many parts of the world to build the railway and contribute to local brewery and textile industries.
We selected local artist Angry Dan to design the mural, asking him to create a local landmark that celebrated the social history and diversity of the area. Dan’s beautiful and meaningful mural is located at @pulseandpickle on Walthamstow High Street. As both a heritage project and a contemporary artwork it stands as a powerful symbol of Walthamstow’s past, present and future.

We’ve just finished a new mural on Walthamstow Market, and it’s a whopper!

This project was commissioned by @stjamesbiglocal to recognise the contribution of migrant workers to the local area using the original livery colours and typography of the Great Eastern Railway.

The piece was produced by Leila at @showponies.studio painted by Auberi and Jason @watchingpaintdry247 and written and designed by me, @angrydan - Thanks to the magnificent @pulseandpickle for granting the permission to paint their wall.

I'd like to thank the entire team at St. James Street Big Local for their incredible hard work in getting this project over the line. There really was an extraordinary amount that went on behind the scenes with this one, so thank you for persevering and making it all possible.

The team at Big Local have dedicated the mural to Jacqueline Sheehy, a much loved and valued member of the local community who passed away last year.

St James Street Big Local is seeking an individual, organisation, or consortium to design and deliver the restoration and repainting of the historic sign on both sides of the London Overground Weaver Line St James Street railway bridge in Walthamstow.

The work will celebrate the area’s rich industrial and social heritage while creating a lasting, high-quality visual landmark.

We are particularly interested in proposals that respect the heritage of the bridge and demonstrate local connection, design excellence, and the capacity to manage all practical aspects of the installation.

Deadline 1st August.
