A striking carpet of protected English bluebells has appeared in one of Cambridge’s oldest and most secluded green spaces.

Hundreds of thousands of the spring flowers have bloomed earlier than usual in an ancient woodland in the grounds of St John’s - just minutes from the city centre.

Bluebells, which bloom across gardens and woodlands from April into May, are considered a vital part of the UK’s natural heritage.

Known for their deep violet colour and bell-shaped petals, they create striking displays across the countryside each year and are widely regarded as one of the nation’s most loved wildflowers.

@david_austrin, Head Gardener, said the bluebells have grown in the grounds of St John’s for hundreds of years, but this year’s display is especially impressive.

He said: “They have flowered earlier this year because the weather has been so mild and kind to them, and we had a lot of rain in the autumn. They look absolutely spectacular, and their presence in an ancient woodland in the heart of the city is incredibly special.”

Legendary ‘Maggie man’ and champion of women’s rowing dies aged 88

Tributes have been paid to former @ladymargaretbc Boatman and coach Roger Silk, whose dedication shaped generations of student athletes at John’s and across @cubcsquad.

For more than four decades, Roger led LMBC – the oldest and largest college boat club in Cambridge – through one of the most successful eras in its history.

Roger died on Sunday 15 February 2026.

@heather_j_hancock, Master, said: “Roger was a Maggie man through and through whose passing will be mourned by the generations of rowers to whom he gave so much encouragement and support.”

As Boatman of LMBC for 41 years, Roger guided crews to victories and through defeats, encouraging countless students to discover rowing.

Among them was Olympian Annamarie Phelps CBE, who arrived at St John’s as a novice. Roger coached Annamarie at LMBC and later for Cambridge University Women’s Boat Club in Blondie in 1987.

She said: “Roger, you gave me and others a taste of success, of opportunity and so many reasons to celebrate, laugh and have fun. You are a legend.

“Thank you for supporting women’s rowing unreservedly, making the women at LMBC welcome, making space, and bringing in world-class coaches.”

Today we are unveiling a student development programme to tackle society’s biggest issues.

St John’s has developed The Common Good Programme to encourage our 1,000 students to explore cultural, social and ethical questions while gaining hands-on experience in public and community life.

⚫️The initiative reflects growing student demand to connect academic study with real-world impact, exploring how education
can serve society as a whole

⚫️Through lectures, workshops, and partnerships with organisations like Citizens UK, students will learn how to lead
change on issues such as inequality, homelessness, and the ethics of AI

⚫️Building on St John’s centuries-long legacy of social reform and leadership, the programme aims to shape graduates
who not only excel in their fields but contribute to the common good.
