Happy White Cane Day! 🦯

The white cane is a tool for independence, and children use theirs to explore and go where they want to go with confidence!

Swipe to learn what different canes mean and help to spread awareness on this special day!

Image 1: White Cane Day flyers rest on a table beside a foam model cane with a black handle and red band. One flyer reads “October 15th is White Cane Day” with an illustration of a person walking with a cane. The others are printed versions of the “White Canes: Did You Know?” and “Guidance Canes” graphics.

Image 2: A red graphic titled “White Canes: Did You Know?” Text reads: “You may recognize a long white cane as a mobility tool for individuals who are blind or have low vision. Did you know that the cane might tell you more about the user’s level of vision? All-White Cane: This cane may signify total blindness. Red Tip Cane: A reflective red strip may indicate some level of usable vision. Red and White Striped Cane: Red and white striped canes are often used to identify the user as deaf and blind/low vision.” Illustrations of each cane appear beside the text.

Pumpkins, hayrides, and s’mores, oh my! 🎃🔥

Our youth groups gathered treasures around Queeny Park to decorate their pumpkins (pinecone noses and pine-needle hair included, and even some recycled trash), took a hayride, and had a bonfire and gooey s’mores.

Thank you to our amazing kids, families, staff, volunteers, and Queeny Park for making it such a memorable day! 🧡

Happy #WorldSightDay!

Every October, World Sight Day brings people around the globe together to raise awareness about eye health and make eye care accessible for everyone. This year's #LoveYourEyes campaign is all about community action, and we're proud to do our part right here in St. Louis!

We love helping little eyes get ready for big things! Our Vision Screening team brings free screenings to childcare centers for kids ages 6 months to 6 years.

Each screening takes just seconds, and catching concerns early means more kids show up to kindergarten ready to learn, play, and explore. When something needs a closer check, we help families connect with follow-up care.

Here's to healthy eyes, happy learners, and bright beginnings!

Apple Pie Playdough is here, thanks to our amazing TVI Maggie! 🍎

This cinnamon-apple-scented playdough is perfect for little hands. Children can squish, knead, and mold with cookie cutters, rolling pins, or plastic knives for extra sensory fun!

For children who are blind or have a visual impairment, sensory play like this builds understanding through touch, scent, and texture.

Try the recipe at home!

DGCKids Receives Funding from the St. Louis Office for Developmental Disability Resources!

At its board meeting, the St. Louis Office for Developmental Disability Resources (DD Resources) approved an investment in DGCKids' Youth Programs.

That investment is part of $7,654,593 in total FY27 community investments supporting almost 1,600 individuals and families across St. Louis City, and we're grateful DGCKids is one of them.

Thank you for making adventure possible for DGCKids!

2010s...Tandem Adventurers takes off!

Throughout the 2010s, the Tandem Adventurers program gained momentum, connecting kids who are blind or have a visual impairment with sighted Captains for the joy and freedom of cycling.

That momentum hasn't slowed down, our riders (kids ages 10 and up) and Tandem Captains (incredible long-term volunteers) are still logging hundreds of miles together.

Ridden with us before? Tell us your favorite Tandem Adventurers memory below!

Fun at Daniel's Farm!

Thank you to Daniel's Farm & Greenhouses for hosting our Fall All-Family Event!

Families visited the petting zoo, hopped on a train ride, and decorated pumpkins with tactile materials, which is important for children who have a visual impairment, so they can feel different textures and shapes!

Shoutout to the @sludeltagamma chapter at Saint Louis University for volunteering with us; you made the day even more special with your positive energy despite the sweltering heat!

DGCKids in the COMMUNITY

What a great day at the VisionWalk in Creve Coeur!

Thank you to the @fightblindness for putting on such a meaningful event, and to everyone who stopped by our table to learn more about DGCKids and the families we serve!

Anne, our Director of Community Engagement, is pictured with friends from Missouri School for the Blind and St. Louis Society for the Blind and Visually Impaired. So grateful to stand alongside such strong partners in this work!

2008: A New Accessible Home for DGCKids

In 2008, DGCKids purchased our current home at 1750 S. Big Bend Blvd, kicking off a $3.5 million capital campaign to make it happen!

That building has grown into classrooms, an art room, a light room for sensory needs, a music room, a gross motor room with a ball pit and swings for therapy, a community room, a bike garage for our Tandem Adventurers, and the office space for the people making our mission happen every day.

What's your favorite spot in the Center? Tell us below!
