So… has the Stone Stomper actually been worth it?

After fitting it up before heading into Northern Australia, we’ve now had the chance to put it through some seriously rough roads, corrugations and plenty of dirt.

The good news? It was surprisingly simple to fit, and after all those kilometres, the caravan has come through completely free of stone damage. 🙌

We’ve also noticed a pretty significant reduction in the amount of dust making its way onto the front of the van, which has been a really nice bonus.

So far, it’s doing exactly what we hoped it would.

We’ve still got plenty more kilometres and rough roads ahead, so we’ll keep putting it to the test — but after this first stretch of travel, we’re definitely glad we fitted one.

Would you run one on your caravan?

So you saw it bogged, and this is how it happened… we had just gotten the truck unbogged then went and unhitched to check the rest of the track down to the beach which is know for being very scratchy and boggy. For just an overnighter and it already getting late in the afternoon after doing the track we decided we were going to hitch up and bug out to a different camp for our overnighter.

Jake walked the track and checked that the ground was hard enough to turn around before attempting the turn but obviously he isn’t 10 tonne 😅

Yes I was a terrible spotter in this situation but I didn’t think it would sink that bad and I over watergates the trucks ability to pull the caravan smoothly. The sinkhole got us and we were there for a few hours.

Part 2 coming…

After years of travelling Australia, we’ve been lucky enough to avoid most of the iconic dirt roads... but that’s all about to change.

With plans to tackle the Gibb River Road, Cape York and plenty of corrugated outback tracks, protecting the caravan has become a much bigger priority.

We were already planning on fitting a Stone Stomper, so this was the perfect time to get one installed before heading north. In this video we’re sharing the ordering process, a quick look at the installation (while juggling life with baby Lucy 😅), and why we think it’s one of the best upgrades for anyone towing off-road.

Now comes the real test.

Over the coming weeks we’ll be putting it through thousands of kilometres of dirt, corrugations and river crossings across Northern Australia. Once we’ve lived with it for a while, we’ll share our honest thoughts on how it’s held up and whether we’d recommend it.

Have you used a Stone Stomper before? We’d love to hear how yours has held up!

From the back of the ute to the back door, it works just as hard at home as it does out bush. Watch it in action…
