🚙💨 Dirt roads, dust and caravan adventures! 🏕️🇦🇺

Travelling Australia means getting off the bitumen and exploring those roads less travelled! 🛣️

With the Stone Stomper fitted between our D-Max and caravan, we’ve got extra protection from rocks and road debris being thrown up on those rough dirt tracks. Less worry about stone damage and more time enjoying the adventure! 🙌

Because out here, it’s all about the journey, not just the destination! 🤠

Apparently the internet thinks we’re going to tow our tinny around Australia like this 😂😂 I better explain it better next time… tinny hitch for rooftop tinny is not intended for highway driving 🚗 🤯 just a FYI 😂

8 DAYS OFF-GRID and we’re still finding ways to push this setup further 😳

From getting the boat back on the water, cooking up a full day of food using the sun, keeping the batteries moving and somehow even boiling a 240V kettle we’re seriously starting to see what this system can do.
And honestly being able to do all of this out here, completely off-grid, is pretty bloody impressive.

Day 8 was a good one ☀️🌊

DAY 6 OFF-GRID

A pretty eventful day out here unexpected winds, a boat full of water, sand flying everywhere and a camp that needed a little extra securing 😅

But amongst all of that we had plenty of good food, another incredible sunset, some seriously impressive solar numbers and a beautiful walk around a place we’re becoming very fond of.
This is the reality of being out here you take whatever the day throws at you and make the most of it.

Another day, another adventure and another night completely off-grid 😍☀️🔋

We honestly feel incredibly lucky to call this our backyard 💚
When spring starts creeping in and the weather begins to warm up something just switches in us. The colours start appearing everywhere, the days get longer and that feeling of wanting to pack up and disappear somewhere takes over.
We’ve been doing this for years in all sorts of different setups. Tents, swags, camper trailers, caravans and now this.
This is exactly why we’ve invested so much into this off-road caravan. Not because we need all the bells and whistles but because every feature, every bit of technology and every solar panel we can possibly squeeze onto that roof is there for one reason.
F R E E D O M
Freedom to go further, stay longer, find the places that aren’t on the tourist map and pull up somewhere completely remote and call it home for a few days.
We’ve deliberately built a setup that allows us to chase the places we love rather than chase caravan parks.
Some of the places we’ve been lucky enough to see have been completely indescribable. The kind of places you can take a hundred photos of and still never quite capture what it felt like to stand there.
There’s always another track, another coastline, another hidden camp and another place we’ve never seen before waiting somewhere out there.
We don’t want to wait for someday. We want to see it, experience it and keep making these memories while our boys are still keen to jump in and come along. As they get older and life starts pulling them in different directions we just hope they’ll always know there’s a spot around the campfire waiting for them.
So yes, we’ll keep maxing out the roof with solar, adding the tech that makes us more self sufficient and building our setups around one thing, being able to chase this lifestyle for as long as we possibly can.
Because for us, this isn’t just camping.
This is the life we love and that will never change!

Stoked our @stone.stomper arrived and we fitted it today. Definitely some great craftsmanship here. Australian made in SA. Had to move the factory stone guard a little bit because I measured something incorrectly but it worked out in the end. Now just have to re fit a few bits we removed for the mounting and we’re on! @torus_rv

📍 Battle Camp Road, Cape York

As we near the end of our Cape York adventure, we take the Battle Camp Road to get out to Elim Beach

In all, we found the road condition good with minimal corrugations. A majority is single lane so be mindful of on coming cars, especially the tourist buses… Of course always check current flood warnings

As we neared Isabella Falls it had been drizzling and the short stretches of bitumen was quite slippery

One of the best things about wandering around these remote parts of beautiful WA, is that you just never know what little pieces of history you’re going to stumble across.
This camp was another one we found scouting around on Google Earth which has become our go to these days when we’re searching for those out of the way spots and what a find 😵🧡

Right out in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by one massive rocky outcrop, with that jaw dropping, rich orange earth stretching all around us, endless views and big skies.
The best part yet again was not another soul was around except for a few curious goats drinking from the local watering hole right outside our van window 🐐 🐐🐐🐐

While exploring the rock we spotted something we definitely weren’t expecting, an old Lands & Surveys marker set right into the rock with “BALLAN” on it.
Of course we had to stop and have a closer look and that sent us down a rabbit hole trying to uncover what it was marking, how old it is and the story behind whoever put it there all those years ago 🤔

Now we want to know have you ever been out exploring and stumbled across something completely unexpected or a little piece of history hiding in the middle of nowhere?
Tell us about it, we love hearing your stories because you just never know what you’ll find when you turn off the main road, follow a dirt track and go see what’s around the next bend.

It’s crazy the places you can stumble across without even looking for them right!!

We came across this massive wide open bitumised area literally in the middle of nowhere and once again in true Wheatland Wanderers style, we’ve somehow managed to stumble across another little slice of heaven and have the whole bloody place to ourselves 😝
Getting the van up the track was a bit tight though.
The bush had got a little overgrown so there was a bit of rubbing and a tiny bit of trimming on a few of the nasty branches but we got the van in.
So for everyone who tells us, “You won’t get that American truck and a 23 foot van into tight places” well we reckon we’ve proved that one wrong a few times now.
Honestly there isn’t one place we’ve wanted to get our setup into that we haven’t been able to.
Sometimes it’s a bit tight, sometimes there’s a bit of bush to deal with but that’s all part of it.
And when you get in and realise you’ve got a place like this all to yourselves it’s so fricken dam awesome.

Just look at where these two have taken us.
The amount of places, memories and adventures packed into our Ram and our @wonderlandrvcaravans is pretty incredible.
From the most remote corners of WA to places steeped in history like Big Bell, every journey seems to bring something new.
As we pull away from another unforgettable place we can’t help but wonder where our Ram and our home on wheels will take us to next ?

So… has the Stone Stomper actually been worth it?

After fitting it up before heading into Northern Australia, we’ve now had the chance to put it through some seriously rough roads, corrugations and plenty of dirt.

The good news? It was surprisingly simple to fit, and after all those kilometres, the caravan has come through completely free of stone damage. 🙌

We’ve also noticed a pretty significant reduction in the amount of dust making its way onto the front of the van, which has been a really nice bonus.

So far, it’s doing exactly what we hoped it would.

We’ve still got plenty more kilometres and rough roads ahead, so we’ll keep putting it to the test — but after this first stretch of travel, we’re definitely glad we fitted one.

Would you run one on your caravan?

Gifted collaboration with @stone.stomper Stone Stomper supplied the product for us to test, but as always, all opinions are our own.
