Join us at Stonehenge for the Great British Braid Off 🌾✨

During October’s half-term weekends, step inside the newly opened Kusuma Neolithic Hall and help create a special braided rug inspired by the skills and materials of our prehistoric ancestors. Our volunteers will show you how to braid a strip using rush which will be sewn together to create mats and baskets for the hall - a chance to add your own contribution, which will have a lasting home at Stonehenge.

You can also try your hand at prehistoric crafts, including pinch-pot and bracelet making, and discover more about everyday life thousands of years ago.

Stonehenge in folklore ✨

For centuries, people have tried to make sense of the mysterious stones standing on Salisbury Plain. Long before modern archaeology could offer answers, stories and legends stepped in to fill the gaps. One fascinating example comes from medieval Arthurian tradition.

This 12th-century illustration depicts a scene from Wace’s 'Roman de Brut,' showing giants helping the young Merlin build Stonehenge. In the legend, Merlin is said to have brought the stones from Ireland, with the help of giants, and reassembled them in Britain as a memorial.

The story is a long way from what archaeology tells us about Stonehenge today but it gives us a glimpse into how people in the Middle Ages understood and imagined the monument’s mysterious origins. by @stonehenge

Look up. The night sky has always been part of the Stonehenge story ✨

For the people who built Stonehenge, the movements of the Sun, Moon and stars were part of the world around them. Thousands of years later, the stones still stand beneath the same night sky and Milky Way

The sky the night before the autumn equinox, and then again at sunrise. 🍂

How amazing that the very same sky can transform from one kind of beauty into another.

Special thanks to our very talented Site Supervisor, Liz for capturing these beautiful photos. ✨ by @stonehenge

Happy autumn equinox from Stonehenge 🍂

Marking the end of the astronomical summer, today the sun is positioned above the equator, meaning day and night are theoretically of equal length. Here, in the Northern Hemisphere, we say hello to autumn.

Name a more exciting school trip ✨

This week, we welcomed our very first school groups to the newly built Kusuma Neolithic Hall at Stonehenge.

Built by our wonderful volunteers using experimental archaeology, the hall offers pupils an immersive, hands-on way to explore prehistory through expert-led workshops. Inspired by Stonehenge’s Neolithic creators, pupils will get to experiment with the replica tools and materials that would have been used to construct the iconic stone circle. 🪨

We’re also working behind the scenes, to make it possible for our visitors to step inside and experience this remarkable space. More information coming soon… by @stonehenge

What’s so great about Stonehenge? 🧐

Stonehenge is unique because it’s the world’s only surviving lintelled stone circle, showcasing amazing prehistoric engineering.

While there are over 900 stone circles across Britain, it stands completely alone due to its unique architectural sophistication, cosmic alignments, and deep structural mysteries. 💫 by @stonehenge
