I was recently asked what was the inspiration behind the last 4 singles you released… First Time was inspired from making love to my lady for the first time!!! When I Think About You was the feeling that came over me when I was 8000 miles from the one, I love!!! Here in My Arms was about how I wanted to protect her from natural disasters out of my control!!! Fa La La is a romantic feeling of how to express passionate love at the end of the night… So In Love which is the single coming soon is about how much in love I am with the woman I can’t live without!!! We hear it all the time from people saying, “Praise God!” It can be something small or big or inconsequential to many! There was a time when I thought, I can’t ask God for a hit record, when so many people are suffering in this world… My pastor and friends said that nothing is too small to ask of him because he already knows your wish! If it feels good to say it out loud, then do it… You are not detracting him from anything or anyone!   So today, once again I am saying “Thank you God!” I had completed my album, but something just didn’t feel right… So, I delayed the release and upon arriving in the Philippines, a torrid of ideas inundated me to where I had to second guess some of the finished material…   With new titles like: How Many Times Get Close to You Say it’s Love Something’s Come Over Me Heart of Gold…   The romanticism that comes from this place is unbelievable! All in the last month!!! I can’t say that all will make the cut or which finished ones will be removed! But what I can say is that in the last quarter of my life, I give Praise to God for still giving me ideas that keep getting better…   I will be releasing a single soon… So, to all of the musicians and songwriters, never giving up means don’t stop believing in your ability! That pertains to anything in life! Today I woke up and had no intention of going to the gym! My Asawa was dressed before I had showered…. So basically, the decision was already in full gear! I didn’t know it would be a day to expect the unexpected…    I was up late working on my album as this musical journey of completion, has me taking so many winding roads! I’m done, no you’re not done, I’m done, no I hear something spectacular to add!   Now, some will call it God’s will and some will say coincidence! To me it was both because I usually exercise 2 days in a row, take a day off and go back for another 2 or 1 day… When you see an American brother overseas, there is always the unity and camaraderie we have at home!   The unexpected was seeing a longtime friend at the gym after we had lost touch! To hear him yell, “Ah Hell No, I thought I would never see you again!” was a shock that was heard throughout the gym! Have you ever had one of those moments when the world stops as everyone is watching two brothers embrace like long lost relatives?   Was this God’s will or a coincidence? Is there a moral to this story? I don’t know but even when you are not feeling it, something good can happen! Recently we had a concert and highlights will be released later! Here is a link to the soundcheck playing a groove that David K Scott came up with on the spot to balance our sounds! David has an extensive background playing with a lot of artists when we lived in LA! He moved back to Chicago to be with his mom and I moved back to Maryland to be with my mother who passed away not too long ago! Yes, we are mama’s boys and proud of it! LOL David, Rob McDonald(bass) and I have been together since 2006! Unfortunately, Rob couldn’t make this concert, but his voice is all over my previous two albums and on the previous single, Here in My Arms! Happy Heavenly Mother’s Day to the two ladies that taught, disciplined and supported me in every way! Country folks from a small farm town in Kansas, to the big city fast life of DC! What a cultural adjustment of how different we are, no matter what color…   Do I ever wonder about the what ifs I had remained in Kansas? Definitely, but the big city turned out was for me…. From Abilene, to DC, to Los Angeles! Keeping your morals and also becoming streetwise! Dangerous situations didn’t deter me…    I was focused on bettering my family, which I did…. For any artist that dreams big, go get it with a backup plan because mine was as an IT Professional! That is what paid for everything I wanted to be!   And because of those 30 or so years, it still does!!! Recently I was asked, “How deep is your faith in your music?” I am in the mixing phase of my third album, and my response was that I am writing the best music of my life right now… I wasn’t being arrogant even though we all have egos… It was a matter-of-fact response behind the words… The work that I have put in and the understanding of what works for me, has culminated in what I truly believe, is my most astonishing work! That in the last quarter of my life, I had to decide which songs were not going to be on this album instead of looking for material to add! Another thing that has made it easier for me is that I am just composing music for me and not for a certain market… The lyrical songs come from the positivity of being in love, which seems like an endless well of ideas to write about… In fact, most of the songs are Romantic which is probably my strongest suit! So, for a kid who grew up on a farm in Kansas, I have a wealth of influences that have come together! Soon, the world will be be able to hear what I consider my best masterpiece from the soon to be released album, Love’s Lessons!!! The brilliance of Smooth Jazz Music is that we can turn a solo into a sound of picturesque visions of love, sereness, and soothing complexity of time standing still… Yes, we have lost a lot of radio stations and for some streaming is viable, but we are a specialty… We are the gourmet dish! We will not be big like Pop, Rap and some other genres…. Our age group does consist of some younger listeners. But keep in mind that as our age group transitions to the heavens, year after year we gain those that are transitioning into our genre of music! I can listen to Jeff Lorber – “What IT IS” from 2001 and Richard Elliot – “Straight Up Down” from 2024 and not know when the songs were released… Our music is timeless and priceless…. We don’t have oldies but goodies! We are a fine wine frozen in time!!! We are quality over quantity…. Not to say that all SJ songs are good, but the musicianship is never questioned! We put in the work and we won’t let our genre die! We get overlooked and our pride comes from our many years of devotion of crafting our sound! Whether we have SJ with vocals or not, we need to support each other and embrace what we bring…. Ideas that do not age! Our festivals and cruises are mostly sold-out events…. So, what if we can’t sell out stadium’s night after night, but I guarantee you that people leave our concerts just as pleased as if they were in a stadium full of people… Whenever I’m in the Philippines people ask me, do you sing? I say I can, but I would rather practice an instrument than my voice…. I have great singers in Rob McDonald and my daughters, Dawn and Shawn! I’m not lucky enough to make a living off of my music…. That comes from my 30 years or so being an IT professional that I retired from… I’m not here for the money…. If it comes, it comes…. I am here because I was born from two musicians and God did not take away my talent or drive when I was supporting my family… My will is as strong as ever while I navigate this landscape of Romantic Smooth Jazz! We have streaming, we have radio, we have concerts and we have a COMMUNITY that relies on us to fulfill their musical desires! That’s what we do and that's why we are HERE!!! by @stormyb2288

The Power of the Competitor Within The power of competition fuels my imagination to compose better songs. Years ago, someone told me to improve something about myself every single day. It’s not just about music; it’s about life. My greatest competition is with myself—and, honestly, sometimes with others!   Every musician follows a unique path to creativity. Sly Stone once told me that when he was young, he would write by looking at himself in the mirror. I tried that for a while as a youngster, but my methods have evolved. In the past, I’d start with a drumbeat. Nowadays, it might be lyrics waking me up or simple piano exercises that spark a new idea.   We always want to believe our current recordings are our best. Whether that’s true often depends on the longevity of a musician’s talent and their commitment to staying positive, confident, and healthy. How long I can stay at this level remains to be seen, but an active mind is key.   Love also works wonders for creativity. It doesn’t just have to be romantic love; the support of family is just as vital. My next album will feature several Romantic Smooth Jazz songs, all buoyed by a relationship I didn’t know was possible.   To my fellow creators: don’t stress if the ideas come slowly. Be grateful that you still have them. It doesn’t always have to be a full album; an EP or even a single is a victory.   Motivation must come from within. How good do I want to be? What do I want to be remembered by? In this last quarter of my life, I will continue to challenge myself. My time is now. With a little luck, a lot of confidence, and sound planning, THE POWER OF THE COMPETITOR WITHIN ME CONTINUES TO FUEL MY IMAGINATION!!! by @stormyb2288
