Some of Covent Garden’s most iconic stories begin after the curtain falls, and few places have been part of them quite like J Sheekey.

For this instalment of our Cellar Community series, we visited one of London’s most celebrated seafood restaurants, tucked away in St Martin’s Court, right in the heart of Theatreland.

🎭🦪 Since opening its doors in 1896, J Sheekey has been serving up post-theatre suppers to generations of actors, writers and audiences.

The story began when Josef Sheekey was granted permission to serve fish and shellfish to Lord Salisbury’s post-theatre parties. More than a century later, that connection to the stage remains at the heart of the restaurant.

From Dame Judi Dench and Sir Derek Jacobi to generations of West End stars, countless famous faces have passed through its doors.

The walls, lined with photographs of theatrical greats, tell their own story of the people who have made J Sheekey a fixture of London’s cultural scene.
