When Mary's husband was away solving cases as a Texas Ranger, Al called her to check in every night. Al passed away from leukemia in 2017, but Mary still checks in with her sweetheart every night when she presses play on his legacy film.

We have to create space for our stories or they’ll never be saved.

Like spending two weeks preparing this RAID. A RAID is a bunch of hard drives that act as one. I have multiple RAIDs, and this one is going from eight to twelve 16 terabyte drives.

Along the StoryKeeping journey I’ve tackled all kinds of technical issues I never imagined. And I want movie making to be an absolute blast for my clients so I shield them from all the parts that are no fun. So why am I sharing this technical nonsense? Because I’m excited to share space with my future clients and their favorite storytellers. A lot of good will come from this. :) by @storykeeping

8 years ago today I was filming this interview with Stephen. He'd just shared a story about losing his grandpa unexpectedly.

So I told him about my wife's affinity for the TV show "Snapped" to lighten the mood. I've been fortunate to sit across from some amazing characters over the years, and I've captured a lot of heart and spirit along the way. by @storykeeping

While scanning the water for dolphins from our 5th floor balcony in Destin three weeks ago, I witnessed two weddings and an engagement. The internet works in mysterious ways, so if you happen to know these people connect me to them and I'll send them some full resolution pics. And, hey, congrats y'all. :) taken in Crystal Beach, Destin, Florida by @storykeeping

Apostle Taylor told me after 5 years of trying to start a church he didn't have a single member. It wasn't until he gave up his businesses that his church started to grow.

This reminded me of when I started StoryKeeping, and how I had $0 revenue to report in that first year. It wasn't until I gave up any other source of income that I was forced to sink or swim.

So did Apostle Taylor believe his church was blessed because he finally obeyed God's command to give up his businesses? Or did he finally put himself in such a desperate situation that he had to make it work? I had to ask, and I loved his response. taken in New Day Deliverance Holiness Church by @storykeeping

Ever heard of the Johari Window? I just learned about this exercise during my instructor training for the Birren Center for Autobiographical Studies.

We were provided a list of ~70 character traits and asked to select which ones we thought we embodied. Next you have people fill it out for you. The results should tell you a few things.

What's known to you and others is "Open." What's known to you and not to others is "Hidden." What's perceived by others but not by you is your "Blind Spot." "Unknown" means that character trait is really not you. by @storykeeping

When I'm working on a story my brain keeps working on it till it's perfect.

I had a fun conversation with a biographer a few days ago and he got me going about how we piece together a client's story. I think everyone has a story about solving a work problem in a completely not-work-related time and place. The human brain is fascinating, no? by @storykeeping

When I know something is about to end I make an extra effort to soak in all the goodness, so I snapped this shot off our balcony in Destin the last night of our vacation. The Hurricane Isaias forecast inspired us to move our trip up a week. No regrets.

"One day, you burned your last mix CD and you didn't even know it'd be the last time." I say this to my wife to try to get her to laugh. In seriousness our life is full of lasts we're unaware of as it's happening. So when folks ask me, "When's the best time to do a legacy film?" I always say, "As soon as you know you're going to want it." taken in Destin, Florida by @storykeeping

The final Seatools long generic test passed at 6:30 this Saturday morning. After the four new 16 TB drives arrived I needed to test them before just plugging them in to join one of my existing RAIDs. If one drive fails during a RAID 5 expansion no worries. If two drives fail during expansion I’d need to use a backup.

Four days later, it’s time to expand the RAID. Which I’m guesstimating will take another week to complete. So around $2,000 and a couple weeks worth of monitoring and sporadic work. Small price to pay to save peoples’ stories. :) by @storykeeping

Getting into a head-on with a drunk driver in 2004 made me appreciate my life even more. If it could be over at the age of 23, how should I be spending my years?

When I recently found a file from 2005 with brainstorming about StoryKeeping, I wasn't too surprised by the timing. Thank you to my clients who've trusted me with their stories. Y'all make my life extra worth living. :) by @storykeeping

Having a Texas Ranger for a husband working odd hours across the state had to have been hard at times. But Al gave her a call every night to "check in" no matter what. When Al was fighting leukemia in 2014 I filmed his story on the 8th floor of Methodist Hospital.

Five years ago this week I learned Mary was still "checking in" with Al every night by pressing play on the stories we'd created. by @storykeeping

If you're going to do something, do it right.

The commissioned legacy film is about her husband, Apostle Taylor of New Day Deliverance Holiness Church in Houston, Texas. I'd spent the morning filming with three other supporting characters, and I was scheduled to film 3-4 hours with Apostle Taylor himself after lunch.

I'd told Renee it felt wrong to not get her perspective for the film, so I asked her to be ready to step in if time allowed. The soul food joint up the road was amazing, and the serving line was fast, so when I got back from lunch I told her it's game time. She told me I had 15 minutes, but I got a good 30 minutes out of her before she noticed. :)

Did our contract say to film with the pastor's wife? No. Was it the right thing to do? Absolutely. I want to be the type of person who does the right thing every time. I want to live up to the story I tell myself. Besides, my clients are awesome and they deserve to be treated right, too. taken in New Day Deliverance Holiness Church by @storykeeping
