There’s no shortage of parenting advice, but not all of it is true. We checked in with our Family Support Practitioners at the Strathcona County Family Resource Network (FRN) about the parenting myths they hear and what they want families to know instead.

Have a broken item you still love? Bring it to be repaired to our Fix-It Fair on November 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Fixers will be available for small household appliances, small furniture, stuffed animals, electronics, clothing, jewellery, guitars, bikes and bags. Items will be repaired by volunteers on a first come first serve basis.

There will also be a tinker table for kids to play around with. No guarantee we can fix it but let's try before you pitch it!

Learn more: strathcona.ca/FixIt Image of a desk with a wooden tool caddy full of tools. There are more tools, sewing supplies and a white mug on the desk in front of the caddy. The mug says 'Don't pitch it let's fix it' across the front. by @strathcocounty

Give wildlife space.

See wildlife on the trail?
Use the thumb rule: hold your thumb at arm's length. If it doesn't completely cover the animal, you're too close. Back up, give wildlife space and enjoy the moment from a safe distance.

This Trail Tip Tuesday is brought to you by the Strathcona Wilderness Centre.

Think before you toss.

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day, but they should never go in your curbside garbage or recycling pickup. Damaged, overheated or improperly discarded batteries can spark fires and put people, property and waste collection workers at risk.

This Fire Prevention Week, take charge of fire safety by disposing of lithium-ion batteries properly. Learn more - link is in our bio! by @strathcocounty

The Sherwood Heights skate/pickleball shack is looking brighter these days 🖌

All thanks to a brand new custom mural by artist Yasaman Mehrsa.

The mural, titled Field, Forest, Flow, is a reflection of the unique relationship between people, recreation and the natural environment at the Sherwood Heights park. Yasaman says she was drawn to how many different activities and experiences come together in one place and wanted the mural to reflect that.

Heading out to Thanksgiving dinner this weekend? Enforcement Services is encouraging motorists to make traffic safety part of their travel plans by following these driving tips:

📵 Put your phone away and stay focused on the road. That text, recipe question, or family group chat can wait until you arrive safely at your destination.
🥘 Secure dishes and cargo. Hot casseroles, slow cookers and food trays should be secured so they don't become distractions or projectiles if you need to brake suddenly.
😎 Be patient with other motorists. Holiday weekends can bring congestion, impatient drivers, and last-minute lane changes. Speeding and aggressive driving aren't worth the risk.
🚗 Drive sober. If your Thanksgiving celebrations include alcohol or cannabis, plan a safe ride home before the festivities begin.
🦌 Watch for wildlife. Deer and other animals are more active in the fall, especially at dawn and dusk.

Let's make sure everyone gets home safely to enjoy the long weekend. by @strathcocounty
