Award-winning placemaking, urban design, transportation planning firm. Leader of the global #TacticalUrbanism movement. Better streets, better places.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Our principals Mike Lydon and Tony Garcia talked with Sara Herschander at @voxdotcom about the recent wave of citizen-led #TacticalUrbanism. Cities can either harness that energy into sustained, responsive action, or snuff it out at the broader detriment of the community.

“You don’t have to hold a crosswalk to the same standard that you hold a bridge.” Tony Garcia
“We’ve documented this over and over,” Lydon said, noting the shift that comes when a city stops fighting a guerrilla intervention and opts to embrace or iterate upon it instead.

“You can do these small things, and it can very much lead to transformational change.” Mike Lydon
We remain inspired by the leaders who choose the former. Mike and Tony share more lessons in their forthcoming book, Quick-Build City: Tactical Urbanism in Action. More to come on that! 👀

This is what reclaiming a street looks like.

This summer, Street Plans helped bring “Urban Flow” to the pavement in Hudson Square — a 6,000 sq ft asphalt mural by artist Dasic Fernández at the heart of the new Little Sixth Avenue Plaza in lower Manhattan.

We advised. We coordinated. We painted. The result is a plaza that tells people: this block is yours!

Street Plans Principal Mike Lydon contributed an essay to Creative Bureaucracy: Where Next & How, edited by Charles Landry (@charles_landry). The book brings together urban thinkers and public innovators from around the world to explore how institutions can become more imaginative, adaptive, and human.

Mike’s essay makes the case for #TacticalUrbanism as a show-not-tell methodology, tracing it from its roots in the Global Financial Crisis to a now-mainstream approach shaping infrastructure programs like the $5B federal Safe Streets program.

We’ve been proponents of tactical curb extensions for years, advocating, designing, building, and collecting data before, during, and after installations.

🎊We’re thrilled to see a new study from Portland State University’s Transportation Research and Education Center, UNC, and @ddotdc that reviewed thousands of pedestrian and motorist interactions at painted curb extensions across Washington D.C. The findings: Tactical curb extensions have statistically significant impacts on behavior, improving satisfaction and safety.

Did you know Connecticut now allows locally-led Quick-Build projects on state roads?

When CTDOT issued a new directive in 2024 to make pilot projects possible, communities were eager to act, but there was little guidance on how to actually do it.

So Street Plans teamed up with our longtime colleagues at the Capitol Region Council of Governments (CRCOG) to develop the Connecticut Tactical Materials Guide, a hands-on resource tailored specifically for Quick-Build projects that meet CTDOT’s criteria. The guide helps planners, elected officials, and advocates trial safer street designs, improve accessibility, and deliver public space improvements on state right-of-way without waiting years for capital projects.

This work builds on our past Complete Streets partnership with CRCOG across the Hartford region and statewide under the ActiveCT initiative, and turns policy into something communities can use. 🙌🎊

Detroit, here we come! 🎉

Street Plans is heading to @pps_placemaking’s Project for Public Spaces’ 5th International Placemaking Week, June 24–26. Our principal Julie Flynn is joining two panels on June 25th to answer two big questions: how can you create social infrastructure from existing street and trail networks, and how do you build long-term momentum from short-term activation?

Join us for the conversation and come find @jflyzenberg and @cassiopealynn while you’re there. by @street_plans

Design for what’s possible.

Street Plans designed @northcoastyard in Cleveland as a flexible public space- one that could grow and adapt. Last month it did exactly that when the U.S. Navy commissioned the USS Cleveland there, drawing thousands to the lakefront.

As we continue to shapeshift this vital public space, new opportunities emerge. The latest is the Legacy Lookout, a rooftop deck on top of a shipping container with front row views of Lake Erie and the city’s skyline. A small addition with a big presence.

Thank you to the USS Cleveland Legacy Foundation, North Coast Collective, Manns Cans and Ruby+Associates for making this happen! taken in Cleveland, Ohio by @street_plans
