Big Dog (Summer) is over. I want to give a heartfelt thank you to everyone who came out on Sunday to spend an evening with us and to support our best Big Dog @olroylacroix . While this season was challenging, we’re so happy to end this chapter on a high note with all of you 🤍

Another tremendous thank you to @thecircleof5ths_ for your generosity of your time and space, we could not have made the event possible or half as magical without you!

@l.a.u.r.e.n_d sent me a resin afghan hound on fbmp and the rest is history. I drove to Austintown on a Wednesday afternoon to meet a very nice woman in a Wendy’s parking lot in order to secure the goods.

Before she allowed me to load the pup into my vehicle (we had the same green Subaru, it was like seeing into my future, really), she requested I take a moment to marvel at it’s beauty and wondered what I would name it. In a panic, I said I needed to spend more time with the statue to understand its energy.

In the spirit of today’s event, I’d like for us to name this *probably* haunted dog together! Whoever submits the winning name will receive an @the_ash_house_ x Strega Shag Carpet collab candle!

Come to Big Dog TODAY @thecircleof5ths_ from 4-9pm, and get your Polaroid taken by @honeybbanne in our vintage Photo Booth designed by @l.a.u.r.e.n_d

There, you too can spend a little time with the dog in question and submit your suggested name for a chance to win! Winner will be announced after the event. Local pick-up to be arranged.

• Shag Carpet •

A hand-poured candle created by @the_ash_house_ to capture the essence of Big Dog:

Stacks of vinyl records, resin, and the ultimate hang in a wood paneled basement, complete with the ever iconic shag carpet.

This scent is layered with warm woody spice, smoke lingering in the air, musk, and a hint of leather. Think Dad Rock with a bit of Funk. Perfect for relaxing on early autumn days with your favorite LPs, namely, Steely Dan.

So honored Jen partnered with us to make this candle happen. It was such a joy to peek into her workshop and pick out scents together 🤍 The Ash House is a magical place.

11oz candles will be available for purchase this Sunday @thecircleof5ths_ as part of the Big Dog makers market.

One week until the party!

Alongside our featured menu for the event, we will have a mini market in the back of @thecircleof5ths_ for all to enjoy. Beyond honored to have this line-up!

Market Spotlight 🛒

✨ @travel_through_time_vintagebus - Mary Borton and Nathan Archer, owners of Akron’s own mobile vintage shop, specialize in 1960s Flower Power and 1970s Disco Era clothing, and decor such as vintage kitchenware, art, linens, and barware. Although these are their main areas of focus, they also love items from the 1950s and prior. Being teenagers in the 1980s, they have a soft spot for that era as well!

✨ @samlilenfield - a multifaceted artist and designer working out of Canton. Her work is a celebration of every day objects and beings through a colorful lens that aims to be an escape from how gray the world can feel around us.

✨ @the_ash_house_ - European-inspired soap, hand poured and dipped candles, and Refillery in Akron. Jen Scott’s ethereal shop focuses on sustainability, local relationships, and ethical ingredient sourcing. For the market, we will be featuring a specially hand-poured candle inspired by the event! More to come this week!

✨ @eriestvinyl - Sam Nemeth, owner and operator of the woman-owned brick and mortar vinyl boutique in Massillon. Her shop specializes in hand-picked, thoughtfully curated new/used records, and she is a beacon for supporting independent music in our community and beyond.

✨ @stephenweaves207 - Stephen Tornero is an Artist and Art educator, focusing on the intersections between color, texture, and pattern in handwoven panels and useful objects. Each textile piece is created in his Canton studio using hand dyed yarns and hand weaving techniques.

✨ @handmadeharvestpottery - Sonny Grzybowski-Phillips has been a potter for a little over 3 years, creating wheel thrown and hand built pottery from Wooster. For her, pottery is not only a much needed creative outlet, but a daily reminder of life’s lessons; teaching patience, discipline, and to embrace (or even highlight) imperfection.

The Big Dog Menu is here!

Join @strega_party on Sunday, September 20th from 4-9pm @thecircleof5ths_ to celebrate @olroylacroix being cancer free and to help offset his medical bills! This will be a public event, NO TICKET REQUIRED!

Killer food for BIG DOGS ONLY crafted by @spicy.agava_mustard and @radroman45 , with special contributions from @kabyliabaguette and @jamtoothbakingco

Marlin will make his return behind the bar with a *one night only* drink menu featuring @towpathdistillery spirits and @lock15brewing on draft.

We’ll have a solid n/a selection, to include a specialty limeade, POPSICLES!, and dessert drinks from our friends at @walkietalkiecoffee

Rounding out the event line-up, a Mini Market: Art from @samlilenfield , @stephenweaves207 , and @handmadeharvestpottery , Vintage @travel_through_time_vintagebus , Records @eriestvinyl , and Candles by @the_ash_house_

Snap a pic in a wood paneled influenced vintage photo booth from @l.a.u.r.e.n_d & @honeybbanne to commemorate the evening, and @thebrainwreck spinning for a chill Sunday set.

Strega is back with a big announcement! After a summer of doctors appointments and one surgery for good measure, @olroylacroix is cancer free! While he’s still on the mend, I wanted to organize a benefit to help offset his medical bills, and I’m very pleased to introduce:

BIG DOG, a Strega benefit. Inspired by our favorite Big Dog (Marlin) and my actual big dog (Edie), and all things Marlin loves most: stacks of vinyl, listening to Steely Dan, wood paneled interiors, and his not so secret admiration of a Margaritaville state of mind.

Mark your calendars for Sunday, September 20th, with the festivities taking place from 4-9pm. This will be a public event, no ticket required!

We are so incredibly grateful for @thecircleof5ths_ for being our host, opening their space, and giving their time and support to make this event possible 🤍

Hi All,

I’m so sorry to announce there will not be a summer theme this year. My partner Marlin, who has greeted you with a welcome drink upon entering our suppers and parties , and has been the creative force behind our featured mocktails during our cafe pop-ups, was recently diagnosed with colorectal cancer at the end of May. I will be taking this time to focus on his treatment and recovery as he navigates an upcoming surgery and possible chemotherapy.

There is a link in bio to his gofundme if you are in the position to support, we greatly appreciate any contribution if you are able. As an industry worker, he will be out of work for at least 5 weeks as he heals from his procedure, and will be traveling from Canton to Columbus regularly for treatment at The James Cancer Hospital at OSU.

While this is an extremely challenging time for our family, I am so grateful for all your support this past year. We’re so lucky to have this community, and we look forward to seeing you once we’re on the other side of this. My hope is to organize an event in the coming months as a benefit for his medical care. Stay tuned here for updates.

Thank you both for all your thoughtfulness and care in making the day so special. 🤍

✨ Partner Spotlight ✨

Returning for another Strega round is @kabyliabaguette . I’m always so excited to talk themes with Hilary, her festive spirit is beyond compare, and the bakery’s Bevy contributions perfectly represent the delicate, beautiful blooms we look forward to each year as we shift into the warmer months.

For the Petit Fours, there was Violet Chocolate: chocolate cake with soft violet buttercream, sprinkled with bright candied violet (what a treat!) and Rhubarb Elderflower: almond cake with rhubarb elderflower compote, cut into a stunning diamond shape. Perfection! 🍰

They also prepared two varieties of macarons to celebrate the occasion in true Royal Tea fashion: Passion Fruit Vanilla Bean (thank you indulging my passion fruit special request!) and Lychee Rose.

The Bevy menu featured two speciality mocktails to honor the themes of the season and @rhowcoffee ‘s mission to provide an exceptional coffee experience.

Lemon Letters; a Versailles inspired Arnold Palmer, with iced French Lemon Creme tea from @ohioteaco , fresh lavender lemonade, and a delicate sparkling finish. It’s namesake comes from the use of lemon juice in invisible ink, rumored to be used by Marie Antoinette for secret codes and personal letters written to friends and *lovers*. Crafted in partnership with @olroylacroix

Strudesso; an aptly named n/a take on a Strawberry Rhubarb Espresso Martini starring the beloved fruits of Spring. Starting with a base of RHOW’s house-made cold brew featuring tasting notes of chocolate, maple, and fruits, highlighted by locally sourced magnolia and fresh strawberry simple syrup, juiced rhubarb, and finished with a dash of cardamom and pink hued Himalayan sea salt. Created by Paul Bean.
