What does Kolkata taste like?
Is it the sharp tang of phuchka water on your tongue? The crackle of telebhaja in hot oil? The smoky aroma of a freshly wrapped kathi roll? The slow rise of steam from a plate of biryani? Or the comforting first sip of cha at the end of a long Kolkata evening?
Perhaps Kolkata cannot be defined by a single flavour. Every street has a story. Every bite carries a memory.
STRICTLY DELICIOUS takes you beyond the plate and into the streets of Kolkata — to legendary stalls, hidden corners, familiar flavours and the people who make the city’s food culture unforgettable.
STRICTLY DELICIOUS is coming.
EVERY CITY HAS A TASTE.
KOLKATA HAS THOUSANDS.

Before malls took over our weekends, a shopping day in Kolkata had its own rhythm.

You went to Fancy Market in Kidderpore to look around, find something unexpected and bargain until you got the price you wanted. There was the excitement of discovering something new, the laughter with friends, and the feeling that the day was not quite over yet.
Because across the road was India Restaurant.

And that is where the real treat began. A plate of biryani arrived—fragrant rice, tender mutton, ghee, saffron and of course, that perfectly cooked boiled egg. Nothing extravagant, yet somehow it made the whole day complete.

For many of us, food memories are tied to places, people and little rituals like these. Strictly Delicious is a celebration of those stories—the food we grew up eating, the places we kept returning to, and the flavours that became part of Kolkata’s collective memory.

Rediscover the city, one unforgettable bite at a time.

Tucked away in Sreemani Bazar on Bidhan Sarani, Kapila Ashram, or Rishi Babur Dokan, has been serving sherbet since 1907. More than a century later, its drinks remain steeped in nostalgia. The creamy Abar Khai Malai Sherbet evokes memories of old Kolkata, while the sharp Green Mango Sherbet refreshes with every sip. The Mishti Paan Malai, meanwhile, transforms the beloved Bengali paan into a delicious, syrupy drink. Generations have passed, colonial Kolkata has disappeared, but Kapila’s flavours remain. In the heart of Tangra, behind the famous Chinese Kali Temple, a little-known culinary legend took shape.
Nearly three decades ago, Ah Leung House created something Kolkata had never quite tasted before — Singara Chow. Steamed noodles, tender pork wontons shaped like the familiar Bengali shingara, and a piping-hot soup came together in a bowl that bridged two food cultures.

But the real story goes deeper.
Li Kiuo Jung, who runs Ah Leung House, credits the recipe not to himself, but to his great-grandparents in China — a couple who loved experimenting with flavours and passed down a secret that eventually found its way to Kolkata.

That is the magic of food. A recipe travels. A memory survives. And a city makes it its own.
Singara Chow is just one story.
STRICTLY DELICIOUS has many more.
Discover the stories behind Kolkata’s most unforgettable food.
