Made a tote that will probably last my entire life thanks to my Singer industrial having the capacity to French seam 10 layers of fabric without missing a BEAT ✿

Sometimes the little projects like this bring the most joy and I finally used up the last of some beloved remnants with it! Super happy with the clean finishes all around and getting more precise with my industrial. I haven’t had to rewind the bobbin yet tho 🫣

Materials
 ✿ Gutermann poly thread
 ✿ Sevenberry cotton print (remnant)
 ✿ Deadstock cotton twill (remnant)
 ✿ Medium weight woven interfacing
 ✿ Garment label

Made a lot of progress building out the handmade wardrobe this summer! It definitely helped to move to a new spot where I could keep my sewing supplies out all the time instead of having to clean the whole kitchen to make space for a machine. 🫨

There are a lot of repeats here which makes me happy because it means I really did make garments that I loved and wore again and again all summer. I wish I took more pictures of other handmade outfits I wore, but I am perpetually about to be late so I didn’t always manage to take a picture!

I got a lot of experience with sewing many different kinds of wovens and developed skills in choosing fabric that fits the pattern and feels like me. I got a lot better at fit adjustments, different finishing techniques, and recognizing my color palette.

Going into the next season, I’m going to practice working with heavier fabrics and delicate fabrics, and making pattern adjustments to more tailored silhouettes. taken in Oceanside, California by @stringtheorycollaborative

This is actually just an ad for Knott’s Scary Farm poorly disguised as a look into the struggles behind my sewing practice 🫣

I almost bought the same fabric print in a neon yellow base but I’m glad that I’ve grown to understand my palette enough to find the warm neutral option with neon highlights instead! I feel pretty good about sewing almost anything I encounter with instructions but I’m branching out to get more practice with fitting and self drafting. Also I have realized I am obsessed with prints that have grids because it suggests functionality/utility even if the garment itself leans more fun or whimsical.

I still had some fabric leftover after this too 👁️👄👁️

Helping my friend @stylearial with a sewing workshop last month reminded me that I know how to shirr !! Unfortunately I forgot that I low key hate shirring…but I’m happy with how this came out! And glad this project came together entirely with random materials already in my stash.

I like that the fabric isn’t so girly pop, I think that’s what makes me like the piece overall. Even though the silhouette is very feminine, the fabric choice feels like it tempers the effect and keeps things interesting.

I’m happy that I challenged myself to get creative with a smaller cut of fabric, took on a project without a fully developed plan, and put the effort in to rediscover an old technique ♥️

It’s the thrift store Zara dress that keeps on giving

Held onto it because I love the way the tencel fabric moves. But I’ve been cycling a lot this summer and it got tight on the hips…

I got the idea to open up the side seams and finish them with bias binding and ties so the dress will always fit me! I also carved a chunk out of the side from the existing side slit and I love how it shows the layers under. Worn here with a skirt, jeans, and a dress but I already see a swimsuit coverup and potential Halloween costume too! by @stringtheorycollaborative

The lion does not ask how much faster it would have been to make these pants without the extra details because the lion knows that’s what makes them treasured!

Truly spent around 20 hours on these puppies and I’m happy with what I have to show for it. The lived in twill from @blackbirdfabrics feels sooo good on the skin and the added floral graph print lining to cover the back side stitches keeps it ✨sensory friendly✨

Though there weren’t any crazy pattern mods here, this was a good practice in letting myself figure out finishes along the way which lets the process be more creative, personally. I had these pants cut out for a while and I wasn’t planning anything special until I saw some beautiful olive toned sashiko thread while visiting/continuing-to-haunt my favorite creative reuse store @material_happiness. Now I can’t imagine not having done the hand stitching over a few long car rides ♥️

designing your own clothes 🤝 surviving southern california’s most humid summer on record

Both tops were made with 0.5 yd fabric remnants of other sewing projects! They were designed to be breathable, body-skimming, and maximize for airflow.

I’ve been getting a lot of wear out of these makes and while I’m still kinda second guessing the back ties on the white top, the extra breeze feels SO GOOD on a hot, sweaty day. by @stringtheorycollaborative

I finish all my ends like this ❤︎

There’s probably a more technically correct method out there, but this works for me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. On the rare occasion they start to pop open, I just apply another layer of glue.

These were the finishing touches on my most recent self drafted top that I created to use up my 0.5 yd fabric scraps ❤︎ by @stringtheorycollaborative

Finally made a sewing bestie and she’s moving to Florida in two weeks 😭 @stylearial

It was really special to sweat it out together in the heat, stopping for pupusas and agua fresca in between fabric stores. Got the exact fabric I was looking for online from @bluemoonfabrics! Also picked up notions and some embroidered cotton and double faced cotton/linen blend from other vendors.

It’s one thing to make this kind of weekend plan for yourself and another thing entirely to have someone who wants to join! 10/10 Saturday, no notes ♥️ taken in Downtown LA, Garment District by @stringtheorycollaborative

Definition of a priceless reaction ❤︎

Sewing time: ~4 hours
Pattern: free wilder hat by Lydia Naomi
Fabrics: remnants from @fabrixsf and @britexfabrics

Felt very special to make something for my aunt to wear in the sun ❤︎

Maybe a clarification that I don’t make things for people (often) 🤫 I would much rather skill exchange or show you how to make the thing yourself! by @stringtheorycollaborative

Mostly self drafted top with scraps from a previous pants project! This was a great opportunity to practice different finishes and remind myself that I do, in fact, have a whole degree in fashion design and I CAN deliver on a vision! The personalized pattern I created specifically fits the 0.5 yd cuts I have accumulating in my fabric stash so there might be some matching sets in my future 👀

It’s funny that I started sewing 100% flying by the seat of my pants on every project (50/50 success rate) but formal training left me kind of overwhelmed with that process and scared to make mistakes. I think we could be coming out the other end now with a creative process AND technical sewing skills???
