Highlighting a detail where form, materials, and sustainability merge… The carport provides a protected place to enter the home. Corrugated aluminum and Radiata Pine provide durability and subtle textural movement with light. The sloped roof extends out, culminating in a wide scupper that directs storm water to a gravel bed and drywell below. Water dissipates from the drywell to nearby rain gardens that serve as habitats for wildlife and pollinators. I’m so thrilled to see this beautiful Hudson Valley home featured in the Fall issue of Country Home magazine. There is something especially rewarding about seeing a project that has taken years of planning, design, and collaboration come to life in print. Nestled in the Hudson Valley, this family home was designed as a retreat—one that could welcome family and friends, evolve with the family, and become a place where generations of memories could unfold. I’m so grateful to have been part of the design team and to have helped create that foundation. I’m especially grateful to my clients for entrusting me with their vision and allowing me to be part of bringing it to fruition. A home of this scale truly takes a village, and I could not have brought this project to life without the incredible talent, dedication, and collaboration of so many trusted partners—from Jimmy Crisp and Troy Curry of @crisparchitects contractor @structureworksconstruction to the many craftspeople and creative partners who helped shape the vision. Before it became a family home, this structure was previously used for the production of now-extinct Poona cheese: a Camembert-like variety once celebrated in a New Yorker profile, and among the most distinguished artisanal cheeses of its era. In working with the designer and homeowner, Elizabeth Mayhew, one of the important decisions was to keep the unusually tall ceiling in this room but with one addition: an elegant new cornice between wall and ceiling. A family house did not need that height, but the building’s earlier purpose did, and preserving it allowed that history to remain part of the architecture rather than being edited away. Summer at the Chatham Pond Pavilion-- a lovely spot to enjoy views of the trout pond and surrounding woods throughout the day. Three intersecting truncated cylinders overhead provide shade and views through to the sky. The concept was inspired by the overlapping pattern of water droplets on the pond. The inner surfaces have a copper colored finish to bounce a warm glow down into the pavilion throughout the day and evening. Designed in collaboration with Rimol Greenhouse, this livestock barn and greenhouse continue the longstanding tradition of farming in Columbia County, NY. The translucent skin of both structures allows diffuse light to bathe the interiors, supporting year-round growing and animal care, while at night these farm buildings register as softly illuminated lanterns in the field. Structureworks Construction managed construction and Wagner Hodgson Landscape Architects designed the pastures for sheep, chickens, goats, and miniature donkeys. Before it became a family home, this building was where Poona cheese was invented in the 1940s. In adapting it for contemporary life, the work was not to make the past decorative, or to erase it in the name of convenience, but to let the building’s earlier purpose remain part of its new one: in the original sign, in the character of the structure, and in the quiet understanding that a house can hold more than one generation of memories. The interior program of the Chatham Guest House includes a kitchenette, home office, guest bedroom, a bathing suite (with a tub, steam shower, and sauna), and a swimming pool with an integrate hot tub/spa. Large sliding glass doors allow the kitchenette to open fully to the pool terrace during the summer months, supporting a fluid relationship between interior spaces and the landscape. Through its siting, section, and controlled use of light, the guest house maintains a strong visual and experiential connection to the broader landscape. Project Team:

On this 80-acre property in Chatham, NY, a guest house is positioned in close relation to the main house, reinforcing the ensemble as a connected family of structures across the site. It incorporates an outdoor pool, spa, and lounge terrace.  The terrace is sheltered by a circular recessed cove whose overhang provides shade during the day and integrated lighting for evening use.
