A Moody Side of Design
With Halloween this week, it feels like the perfect time to explore the moodier side of interior design. While there’s nothing creepy or scary about these rooms, they each evoke a distinct feeling.
I love creating interiors that embrace darker palettes. Rich tones, layered textures, and a warm, inviting aesthetic draw you in and make you want to stay awhile. Whether it’s a deep paint color, an unexpected wallcovering, statement tile, or brass accents that catch the light, the magic is in the details. A deeper palette brings each element into focus, allowing even the smallest design decisions to make an impact.
These palettes often find their way into dining rooms, bars, and butler’s pantries. They’re spaces made for gathering, entertaining, and lingering a little longer.
Because great design is about more than how a room looks. It’s about how it makes you feel. And sometimes, the most memorable interiors are the ones that know exactly how to set the mood.

The morning mist lifts from the Chatham farm. The polycarbonate siding and roof panels at the barn and greenhouse provide filtered light for livestock and agriculture by day, and then transition to lantern-like moments in the evening.

The first day of autumn has passed, and you can already feel the shift. The changing light, cooler temperatures, shorter days, and longer evenings all signal a subtle change in the way we spend our time.
This time of year, I’m always drawn to the warmth of rich wood tones. Exposed beams, deeper finishes, layered textures, and patterned fabrics bring a sense of depth and warmth to a room—creating spaces that naturally invite you to slow down and settle in.
As much as we love being outdoors, there is something especially inviting about an interior that feels warm, layered, and considered as the seasons begin to change. A home that makes you want to linger just a little longer.

Transitions between rooms can be captivating in unexpected ways. Here, the views through to the landscape frame the passage into a bedroom… a way to create calm and warmth simultaneously with light, views and materials.

Highlighting a detail where form, materials, and sustainability merge…
The carport provides a protected place to enter the home. Corrugated aluminum and Radiata Pine provide durability and subtle textural movement with light.
The sloped roof extends out, culminating in a wide scupper that directs storm water to a gravel bed and drywell below. Water dissipates from the drywell to nearby rain gardens that serve as habitats for wildlife and pollinators.
Holistic design, captured in a moment at the Chatham Residence…

A kitchen pantry may be designed around organization and function, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be beautiful, too.
Often smaller and more tucked away, these spaces offer an opportunity to be a bit more playful with design—introducing a smaller-scale wallpaper, an unexpected cabinet color, or the simplicity of open shelving. I love the interplay between what is concealed and what is intentionally left on display, creating a space that feels both highly considered and effortlessly useful.
Because thoughtful organization is about more than simply knowing where everything belongs. It’s about creating a sense of order and ease within the everyday.
And perhaps that is the quiet luxury of a beautifully designed pantry: everything has its place, and even the most utilitarian moments of daily life can feel a little more beautiful.

September is on our doorstep, and I can’t help but look back on some of the memorable moments from summer 2026. Looking through images from projects both completed and still in progress, along with a few personal milestones and everyday moments, is a reminder of just how much can happen in a season.
A few highlights from a very full—and very special summer:
1. NYC photoshoot
2. Seeing our Country Home Magazine feature in print
3. Our Sea Girt project nearing completion
4. My daughter Brynne’s cross-country adventure
5. Celebrating my son Aidan’s college graduation
6. Breaking ground on our new home in Park City, UT
7. Mendham, NJ multi-bathroom renovation project nearly complete
8. Watching our Rumson project begin to take shape
9. Making the final selections for our Wellington, FL project
10. Selling our Summit, NJ home—and looking forward to our new VGI office space coming soon!
So much to be grateful for, and so much to look forward to as we head into fall. 🍂

A library often carries more of a family’s memories than any other room in the house... defined by the character of its cabinetry, the placement of its windows, the material of its walls, and most importantly, what the shelves hold.

I loved sharing our Country Home magazine feature earlier this week. There is something especially exciting about seeing your work in print, particularly because so much of what we do today is experienced through a screen. There is something wonderful about slowing down and flipping through a magazine at your own pace.
I wanted to share a few additional rooms from this project designed with the younger members of the family in mind.
The first is a nursery that also functions as a comfortable sitting room, with a pull-out sofa that makes the space incredibly versatile—perfect for visiting family, overnight guests, or simply a quiet place to retreat.
The second is one of the most inspiring spaces in the house: a library wrapped in a worldly graphic wallpaper, with built-in bookshelves and dedicated desk areas. A space for reading, studying, working, and, of course, getting lost in a good book.
Both spaces were designed to be flexible, functional, and beautiful, with the intention that they could evolve right along with the family over time. To me, that is one of the most rewarding parts of designing a family home—creating spaces that feel special today while leaving room for the life that will unfold in them.

I’m so thrilled to see this beautiful Hudson Valley home featured in the Fall issue of Country Home magazine. There is something especially rewarding about seeing a project that has taken years of planning, design, and collaboration come to life in print.
Nestled in the Hudson Valley, this family home was designed as a retreat—one that could welcome family and friends, evolve with the family, and become a place where generations of memories could unfold. I’m so grateful to have been part of the design team and to have helped create that foundation.
I’m especially grateful to my clients for entrusting me with their vision and allowing me to be part of bringing it to fruition. A home of this scale truly takes a village, and I could not have brought this project to life without the incredible talent, dedication, and collaboration of so many trusted partners—from Jimmy Crisp and Troy Curry of @crisparchitects contractor @structureworksconstruction to the many craftspeople and creative partners who helped shape the vision. Thank you to @andrewfraszphoto and @annamolvik for capturing this project so beautifully.
It’s incredibly rewarding to see this special project celebrated in the pages of Country Home.
