Congratulations to the incredible cast, crew, and production team of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD LIVE! This one took a lot of artistry, ingenuity, patience, and sheer determination to get up on its feet. It was a big hill to climb, and this team climbed it together, all while building something that is genuinely, ridiculously funny. I’m so proud of the work, the collaboration, the commitment, and the absolutely gorgeous and bonkers black-and-white world they’ve created. What a fabulous opening night. I’m very lucky to get to make weird, wonderful theatre with weird, wonderful people like this. NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD LIVE! Now playing through October 31 at Open Stage. (And not pictured: lots of wonderful people who helped make this happen.) by @stuartlandon
First halloween at the new place! Small but adorable...I mean spoooooky. by @stuartlandon
No filter needed. NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD LIVE really is in black and white. I’ve been having an absolute blast with this show. It is hysterically funny, and I’m so proud to work with this amazing group of artists. The performers, set, costumes, makeup, fight choreography, props, lighting, and sound have all come together to create this fabulous black-and-white world - a perfect blend of stupid and stupider, with just enough loving homage for those of us who are fans of the original film. It’s a romp. It’s a laugh a minute. And it’s just so much fun to look at. NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD LIVE plays through October 31 at Open Stage. 🧟‍♂️ @openstagehbg by @stuartlandon

Congratulations to the beautiful cast, crew, and production team of HAROLD AND MAUDE on Opening Night! 🌻 There’s something very special about this strange little story. Two people find each other when they need each other most — and in all its weirdness and humor, Harold and Maude reminds us to pay attention. To each other. To the world around us. To the time we have. I’m incredibly proud of this company and the funny, quirky, thoughtful, beautiful thing they’ve created. I can’t wait to finally share it with an audience. Come have a drink, see some wonderful actors tell a sweet story, laugh a lot, and maybe leave wanting to hold the people you love a little closer. And, of course... L-I-V-E. LIVE! 🌻 HAROLD AND MAUDE Now playing through September 26 at Open Stage openstagehbg.com by @stuartlandon

I was pretty lost before 268 Cumberland, wounded and wondering what the hell came next. Days before we closed, I came across a young cat who was as lost as I was. I needed to protect him for a little while. Inexplicably, I broke into the house, and we spent the night on an air mattress. The basement door was unlocked, for the record. Hopefully the statute of limitations has expired on whatever crime that was. Hope that cat’s okay. That night, I sat in the empty living room and took a picture. Yesterday, thirteen years later, I sat in the same spot and took another. That 31-year-old had no idea what he was in for. And, as Karen said yesterday: neither did the house. Soon, the butter yellow walls were Millennial Gray. And we were off. At my housewarming party, Trish won the house-naming contest: “This Bitch.” This Bitch has been busy. Dinner parties, Thanksgiving turkeys and chocolate dinners. Gingerbread house contests. Play readings. Watch parties. Movie nights. Pumpkin carving. Board games, video games, and pregaming. An auspicious stripper. Wine and whiskey. Market mornings. The deck. The pink cherry tree. Those ancient, knotty floors. Art everywhere. I made new friends and held onto old ones. Had adventures. Made terrible and beautiful mistakes. I fell in love. My heart was broken there, and I broke some hearts, too. I loved and said goodbye to two beautiful kitties, Sterling and Finn. Actors lived on the third floor. Anne Frank in my attic. I redecorated. Accumulated unreasonable amounts of vinyl. I survived a plague in that house. Piece by piece, it became home. Those empty rooms filled up with a life. And thank you, friends, for filling those rooms with so much love. I think I grew up there. Or reinvented myself. Or found myself. Probably all three. Somewhere along the way, Dan walked in. Life became even more beautiful. Thanks, Mom and Dad, for helping me find this house that rebuilt me. And thank you, my beautiful home. And goodbye. Somehow, 13 years happened inside your walls. It feels like yesterday and a lifetime ago at once. I look at that 31-year-old, having no idea what was waiting in your rooms... And I won’t tell him a thing. by @stuartlandon

Hbg Fringe Day #4: The final sprint! 20 shows in 4 days. “I feel like I was hit by a bus full of theatre kids.” - @danmacgreg I WILL BE YOUR VOICE - Open Stage - Produced by OSHKids ZJ and Nick, these young artists held their own, sharing lovely monologues inspired by Central PA youth experiencing homelessness. Proud to see so many students from The Alsedek Theatre School involved. ❤️🧡💛💚 YOU’RE NOT SUPPOSED TO SAY MACBETH - The Forum - @orpheusmoves delivered a smart, funny, bloody horror play, and good horror on stage is hard to pull off. Strong performances, a great twist, fun blood, and well-staged violence. The Forum is cavernous and unforgiving, but I’d love to see this in a smaller room someday. ⚔️🩸🔪🕯️ DEALBREAKER - Culture&Co - @_laurentellsstories’ heartfelt solo show about stigma, shame, dating, herpes, and learning to love yourself anyway was warm, honest, funny, and easy to root for. 💔💬💊💕 TIM KENNETH KICKS THE BUCKET - 312 Chestnut - @kestreleyeproductions’ play follows college students concerned about their professor after strange behavior and a whoopie pie incident. Strong performances and interesting scenes, but this one felt structurally elusive to me. 🥧🍹 IF I CLEANED EVERYTHING - Culture&Co - @mindmeld_productions’ two-hander about grief, old relationships, music, and things left unsaid featured grounded work and lovely songs. For me, the play still felt young, and I wanted a clearer sense of why this story needed to be told. 🎸 SHANGRI-LA-LA - Gamut - I love parody. I love stupid. I love irreverent. I love musicals. I should have loved this chaotic Siegfried & Roy fever dream, but it was just not for me. Big swings and campy chaos, yes, but it felt messy, unfocused, and underdeveloped. 🐅 GENESIS - Open Stage - @curioushope’s beautiful, searching new one-act follows a young astrophysics student whose understanding of herself, her heart, her beliefs, and the universe begins to shift. A lovely new work with so many delightful moments. I look forward to what’s next for the play. What a fabulous cast! 🌌✨🪐🔭 Congrats to @hbgfringe, @briannapatricedoww, the artists, venues, volunteers, and everyone who made it . Happy Fringe! by @stuartlandon
Hbg Fringe Day #3: Oops! All solo shows! THREE TIMES THEY MADE ME READ WUTHERING HEIGHTS - Culture&Co - Rita Smith @immabrontegirl returns to @hbgfringe w/ another smart, bibliophilic piece of storytelling. A delight! The tale she weaves through depression, motherhood, sex, friendship, and self-actualization is brilliant and heartfelt. I especially loved the period costume shed to reveal a pink “Brontë Girl” tee. 📖🩷📚 OPTIMISTIC PERSONALITY DISORDER - Open Stage - Merit Kahn explores her 5 decades in a funny, somewhat over-directed show that has a lot of laughs and is well-performed by the dazzling Kahn with heart, pizazz, amazing dimples, and a heap of costumes. Big fan of the different phones to represent decades. @meritkahn is a fab performer, for sure. ☎️📞📱😁 SHITTY MOZART - Gamut - What a stupid and brilliant show, back in Hbg. I’m thankful bc I missed it last time! Aaron Nemo is pure chaos and charm as the composer clone. @aaronnemo’s songs and animations are dumb and I love ’em. Rats and pigeons having sex, random bees, delightful use of sound and video, and a wig that deserves to both be ripped off his head and given its own Peabody. 🐝🎶🐀🐦🚇 GUILTY PLEASURE - Karma - Queer comedian Amanda Melhuish was right at home on that stage on the third floor of the gay club, even if the venue had a rather loud fan (?) going. I quickly forgot about the hum bc @amandahasbangs is so engaging. She just glitters; and it’s not just the makeup on her bosom. This charming show about sexual desire, awakening, and pride was top-notch. The writing, simple staging, and use of a strap-on were all fab. 🍆🩷✨🦄🍆 NICK THE GREEK - Gamut - I very much enjoyed Angeliki Giannakopoulos’s extended homage to her father, who emigrated to the US years before his family. @angelikigianna had a pile of props and costumes to navigate and I think she’s an exceptional actor. Her physicalization was gorgeous. 👔🇬🇷🧥 DEATH THREAT - Open Stage - Welcome to Rima Parikh’s beautifully dry, smart Cancer PowerPoint Standup Party. I could not stop laughing. The show dipped a bit toward the end, but @rimaparikh12 rallied and sparkled. Relatable, well-told, and entertaining. 📨📩📧✉️ by @stuartlandon
