A recently completed kitchen crafted from a single windblown oak tree, with British limestone worktops, Portland stone floors and brassware hand-crafted in the UK.

This is the beginning of telling the story of a much larger project, including the kitchen, flooring and furniture made from the same storm-felled tree from just outside the kitchen window.

There is much more to share about the history of the house, the timber and the process of bringing it back into the building, but for now we’ll begin with these images of the quiet morning light of the kitchen. by @studio.silvan

The bespoke kitchen has been meticulously crafted by @studio.silvan using surplus materials from previous projects. Brown Oak, Oak, Cherry, Douglas Fir, and Ash are arranged in a subtle gradient, forming a striking composition that highlights the rich tonal and textural variation between species.

The internal carcasses are formed with Valchromat, repurposed from earlier projects, introducing a playful mix of colours behind the refined cabinet fronts. The result is a tactile celebration of local materials and sustainable craftsmanship.

The kitchen and pantry joinery at Cairngorm Cottage were designed by @architectureoffice.co.uk and fabricated by @studio.silvan using a three-ply Scottish ash system.

The natural grain and vertical staves of the timber bring warmth and character to an otherwise restrained interior.

We are so proud to be shortlisted alongside @studio.katie.paterson and @zellerandmoye for this year’s Wood Awards (@woodawards) for the table we completed for Katie’s incredible new work ‘Afterlife’.

The artwork is currently on show @collective_edin only until this Sunday 6th of September.

It was a huge team effort from everyone in our wonderful team at Silvan to realise this incredible concept from solid sycamore and huge thanks are due to @stilllifeworkshop @haeunspace and Evan for all their hard work.

-

This sculptural sycamore table forms an integral part of the Afterlife artwork, creating a carefully modelled landscape in which almost 200 handcrafted amulets are individually displayed.

The installation reimagines the ancient tradition of the amulet through objects inspired by cultures from around the world and recreated using natural materials gathered from endangered landscapes and fragile ecosystems. The bespoke table responds to these themes through a sweeping, curvilinear form echoing riverbeds, geological strata and glacial erosion. Its undulating surface is sculpted with shallow hollows, each precisely shaped to cradle a specific amulet.

Exceptional places are shaped by exceptional people.

In a workshop surrounded by East Lothian farmland, Silvan Studio transforms whole trees into furniture, interiors and objects designed to last generations. Their work sits at the intersection of traditional craftsmanship and modern making, guided by a simple belief: good materials, handled with care, need very little decoration. The result is work that feels honest, timeless and unmistakably connected to the place it came from. #MeetTheMakers #MadeInScotland #ExceptionalPlaces #CabinLife

A big part of our recently completed project at Otterburn House with @croft.works , was about custodianship of a tree.

A mature oak standing just outside the house came down in a storm, and together with our clients and Theo @croft.works we considered how best to honour it: how to mill it, how to dry it, and where to put it to best use throughout the home.

The extra-wide boards in the hallway are one of the first things you see and interact with when entering the house. Rather than hiding the character of the tree, we chose to celebrate it. Knots, splits and natural defects have been carefully repaired with butterfly patches, allowing the floor to tell the story of where it came from.

The boards lead you through the house towards the kitchen and dining room, which were also made from the same tree, carrying that story from the moment you step through the door.

Our clients told us their son spends ages counting the butterfly patches in the floorboards. We can’t think of a better reminder that the best materials don’t just fill a space — they become part of the life lived within it. by @studio.silvan

Evening light on sawn oak textured drawers in our Otterburn House project.

The kitchen, dining furniture and hallway flooring were all crafted from an enormous oak which sadly uprooted in front of the Georgian house, where it had stood presumably since the house was built.

We’ll be sharing a bit more about the 2 year process of working on this commission, including full image set very soon. The project started with the challenge of milling a 1.7m wide oak in the middle of a field, through seasoning and kiln-drying and finally making a kitchen and joinery package that honoured the tree, respected the context of the beautiful Georgian home and, most importantly, will provide a beautiful and practical space for a growing family to enjoy for years to come.

‘La Casita’

A truly special kitchen crafted from a mixture of locally grown timber species to create a subtle patchwork reflective of the natural diversity of native woodland. We believe in the power of bringing a daily relationship to natural material into every project we work on: the natural tones and patterns of wood, the deep-time of natural stone, real materials that go so far beyond the surface. Here cherry is framed by ash.
