🪵 Afterlife

Today’s Wood Awards 2026 Shortlist Spotlight explores the relationship between art, nature and craftsmanship through Afterlife, a sculptural sycamore table designed to display almost 200 handcrafted amulets as part of artist Katie Paterson’s wider artwork.

Created by Zeller & Moye, the bespoke table forms a carefully modelled landscape inspired by riverbeds, geological strata and glacial erosion. Each of its shallow hollows is precisely shaped to cradle an individual amulet, bringing together objects inspired by cultures around the world and recreated using natural materials gathered from endangered landscapes and fragile ecosystems.

Made from UK-grown sycamore, selected for its pale colour, fine grain and tactile warmth, the table combines structural engineering with extensive hand carving and finishing. Digital fabrication established its principal contours before the surfaces were carefully refined by hand, creating a topography reminiscent of naturally weathered landscapes.

Designed in eleven sections for installation within a historic Martello tower, the knock-down structure incorporates concealed steel framework and precision-engineered connections, allowing repeated assembly without compromising its sculptural form.

📍 Location: Folkestone & Edinburgh
🪵 Wood Supplier: English Woodlands Timber
🌳 Species: Sycamore (UK)

The kitchen and pantry joinery at Cairngorm Cottage were designed by @architectureoffice.co.uk and fabricated by @studio.silvan using a three-ply Scottish ash system.

The natural grain and vertical staves of the timber bring warmth and character to an otherwise restrained interior.

Introducing two new coffees through our Solasta Subscription 💫

The first is Lalesa from Ethiopia, our first featured black honey process, with notes of peach and caramel and a boozy character reminiscent of orange wine.

We’re also featuring La Molienda from the Rivera family in Colombia, a clean and balanced coffee with notes of apricot and brown sugar.

For August, every Solasta subscription send will also include a complimentary steeped coffee bag.

Find out more via our website.

🛠️ It’s finally done, we can reveal what we’ve been working on all year! The first new book furniture for the shop since day one: a custom wall of shelving to really open up our kids’ section! That means much more space for prams and some soft furnishings which are coming very soon.

Massive thanks as always to the heroes at @studio.silvan for getting this built and installed for us!

But where did the book cases that used to hold our childrens’ books go you ask? Reintegrated into the rest of the bookshop!

We’re pleased to announce:
• A 50% increase to the horror section - with the addition some of special import titles

• A 33% increase to the sci-fi/fantasy section - now with a bit of breathing room for more of our favourite authors

• New displays for collections, prizes events and more - letting us highlight books that we’re particularly excited about

We can’t wait for you all to see the new layout, we’re really happy with how it’s turned out. Have a lovely day, we’ll see you the bookshop soon!

BOOKSHOP UPDATE: We’ll be closing early (5pm) tomorrow evening (29th) for a very big, very exciting and very long-overdue upgrade to the bookshop!

We’ll have more than just a teaser to show you tomorrow but we’ve been working away on this since last Christmas (and that’s just the physical work, mentally it’s even longer than that!) and we’re so excited to finally get to show you all the end result.

Stay tuned and we’ll see you soon! 🧡

Earlier this year, we welcomed good friends Adam and Dora from @nagarecoffee to the roastery and spent time together selecting a coffee to feature collaboratively. 💫

With spring and summer in mind, we chose a washed Kenyan lot with bright berry notes, citrus sweetness and a clean finish. We also created a box that encompasses both of our identities, with Dora’s calligraphy woven across the box design.

The final boxes from the collaboration are now available in limited quantities across Nagare Coffee’s three London stores.

A guide to how we brew iced filter coffee at the roastery. 🌞

After spending time in Korea, we came back with a fresh perspective on iced filter coffee and developed a recipe that we’ve been brewing at the roastery.

For this method, we’ve been enjoying Haru, a natural Ethiopian coffee featured in July’s Solasta subscription. It produces a refreshing cup with a honeyed sweetness and bright blueberries.

V60 brew guide:

Coffee: 18g

Water: 200g at 96°C

Ice: 100g in the server

Brew time: 2:15

1. Rinse your V60 filter thoroughly to remove any paper taste.

2. Grind 18g of coffee to a medium-coarse setting. Add 100g of ice to your server, place the brewer on top, and add the ground coffee.

3. Begin with a 70g bloom. At 0:45, pour to 135g. At 1:30, finish your pour to 200g, using slow, controlled circles throughout. Once brewed, stir the remaining ice in the decanter gently to incorporate.

Finally, serve over a glass with ice and enjoy.

A privilage to photograph @studio.katie.paterson with her new @collective_edin show Afterlife ahead of its opening.

I often feel very fortunate in my work getting to take time with artists to hear their throughts and ideas as I photograph. I am someone who loves what is behind a finished item. The process behind the scenes. I get to learn little details that many visitors won't know and it helps me really make a connection to the work. Katie's work is soooo interesting and I cannot endorse a trip up Calton Hill enough to see it in person. It is a beautiful, profound and emotional work in surprising ways.

Sunscreen and hydration everybody!🥵
