EMMA & WILLOW

Emma has an extraordinary eye for detail, which is why we rely on her to finish a job properly once everyone else has moved on to the next thing. Her dog Willow has a similar eye for warm spots, wood pigeons, and the cows in the field behind us.

When a new project comes in, Emma is always helping with the design solutions, brainstorming, testing, trying one method then another before anything’s committed to. Willow, meanwhile, is usually somewhere underfoot, alert to the possibility of lunch arriving early.

Her background in textiles means Emma fits in perfectly here, and she always has quirky solutions for the most challenging problems.

She also lectures in 3D design, which probably explains her patience, nothing seems to rattle her. Willow’s patience runs out considerably faster, chiefly around pigeons and cows.

Between the two of them, one makes sure everything goes out at its absolute best, the other just makes sure everyone’s feet stay warm.

A good balance to have around. @emma.yeo.maker

Willow, weaving and a slower way of life. Step inside Studio Amos’ East Sussex home and studio to meet husband-and-wife duo Annemarie and Tom, and discover the craft behind their beautiful woven pieces.

For them, making by hand is part of everyday life. Their work, their home and their slower approach to living offer plenty of inspiration.

Come with us as we Meet the Makers.

TWO BASKETS, ONE SEA

During my @qestcraft scholarship I spent time in Wales learning the Cyntell basket with Les Llewellyn, then went over to Armagh to learn frame baskets with Alison Fitzgerald @greenwoodbaskets. I’m really grateful to these generous and skilled teachers.

I like thinking about the people who moved back and forth across the Irish Sea for generations, carrying their skills and their baskets with them, quietly blurring the traditions of each place.

Our version of the Ulster Potato Basket is a hybrid because of that. The order of build comes from the Cyntell, the curvaceous line comes from the Ulster itself.

We will have a small number available as part of the next stock drop on 6th November (including our new XL version), or you can come along and see them in person @daylesfordfarm for their craft fair 10th and 11th October. by @studio__amos

WORK OF THE HAND

Come and find us on the 10/11 October at Daylesford Farm, 10am to 5pm. A day celebrating contemporary craft across ceramics, textiles, wood, metal, glass and natural materials.

Daylesford’s been one of the UK’s biggest organic farms for years now, built on the idea that good farming and good craft come from the same place, working with materials rather than against them, and trusting the slow way of doing things over the fast one.

We’ll have a selection of baskets with us, so come and see them up close, and do say hello.

MEET MATILDA

If you ever walk past our workshop there’s a good chance you’ll hear the sound of Matilda’s laughter.

Matilda is our do-er, she can be presented with any task and she will take it on without batting an eyelid.

It has been almost nine years since she first joined the team, and she completed her apprenticeship with us in 2023, thanks to funding from @qestcraft.

She and Annemarie often weave together on the same basket, swapping back and forth between them so it passes through both their hands before it’s finished. It is something they started doing during Matilda’s apprenticeship and has now become part of how they work together, ensuring there is consistency across all of our work.

Matilda has touched pretty much everything we have made in the nine years since she’s been with us, willow, rush, heather, straw, all of it. She is also very handy with every tool in the workshop, and it shows in her work.

Thanks @matildagrover we’d be lost without you, honestly. by @studio__amos

FEATURED

A few of the images from our shoot with Modern Rustic and Country Living earlier this year. The house, studio and garden all getting their moment.

It’s always a joy seeing the space through someone else’s eyes and extra special seeing it in print.

Four extraordinary makers come together as part of The Future is Human Made: Hands, Work, Power, exploring the relationship between craftsmanship, materials, sustainability and making.

🎨 Eddy Bennett
A QEST Scholar and reverse-glass artist, Eddy combines Victorian sign-writing and gilding techniques with a contemporary aesthetic, bringing historic craft skills into a new context.

✨ Cassie Quinn
Founder of CQ Studio, pioneering regenerative designer and CSM alumni, Cassie combines traditional textile craft with biomaterial research to explore new approaches to fashion, textiles and production.

🪵 Sophie Sellu
Founder of Grain & Knot, Sophie creates sculptural and functional wooden objects from reclaimed and sustainably sourced timber. Her practice celebrates traditional hand tools, material knowledge and the enduring value of making by hand.

🧺 Annemarie O'Sullivan
A QEST Scholar and acclaimed Basketmaker, Annemarie draws on ancient weaving traditions, folklore and the landscape. Working with willow grown and harvested by hand, her practice connects traditional knowledge with contemporary making.

Together, they will explore how traditional skills, new ideas and human creativity can contribute to a more sustainable future.

NEW HEIGHTS

Back in 2024 we installed four Breck Lights at Denton Hall, the tallest ceilings we’ve ever hung anything from.

Getting a heather light up into a high period ceiling is not a job you rush.

There was lots of climbing ladders and holding our breath but we had an amazing team and the Yorkshire electricians did an absolutely brilliant job (and kept us all in good spirits).

Thanks to @box9design for the commission and these images of the install, we loved working with you on this one. And to @dentonreserve for the space itself. by @studio__amos

HANDS DOWN

Every basket from the pre-order stock drop is made and about to head out the door, Tom putting the last one down here to be boxed up with the rest. That’s the lot done.

We’re taking a proper break over the summer after this one, our bodies are really ready for a rest.

September’s always welcome though, a whole new batch of work starts then, and there’s plenty of new ideas that have been brewing over the past few months that we’re looking forward to getting stuck into.

The next stock drop is on 6th November and newsletter subscribers get first dibs before it goes public (sign up to the link in bio if you want in on that).

SORE THUMBS, FULL SHELF

If you were lucky enough to grab one of our Bow Baskets on pre-order, they’ll soon be on their way to you.

It’s been a race against the heat these past few weeks. Willow dries out fast in this weather and really doesn’t want to play the game, so we’ve been chasing the coolest corners of the workshop, and moving rods in and out of the freezer.

My thumbs have taken the worst of it. I’ve been busy wrpping them in ice packs come the end of the day.

Here’s some behind the scenes of their forms taking shape, and a finished one ready to go.
