A Fox’s garden.

Both the house and garden of this Victorian home were designed by the late Wilson Lloyd Fox as his ‘place to escape’. He created a tropical paradise in the heart of Falmouth with gardens rolling down to a framed coastal view. When our clients took it in a lot of work was needed to bring it al back to life and most of all create a space to fully enjoy being present in the luscious landscape.

We popped back late summer to see how the new garden room was fitting in and how the nearly created terrace was bedding into its surroundings.

Technically a very challenging project to blend old and new together, focusing on hand made, locally sourced, individual details while also considering the carbon in how the building was built.

Hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

International style.

For a client who wishes for a new garden room for their delightful 1930’s home, we have been explore early ideas to create a touch of the Bauhaus movement. Looking to Walter Gropius, the pioneer of such designs has been great fun, while needing to tailor a scheme to fit into a sun soaked courtyard.

The existing house has curved bays and detailing that has given some rational behind the early sketches in the hope to bring this to life. Along with the garden room we are also putting pen to paper for a curvy landscaping scheme to tie it all together.

Recent out of office outings.

Last weekend was spent exploring glorious Dartmoor by bike, sleeping under the stars and enjoying the simplicity of life on two wheels.

Bikepacking resonates with me on so many levels, the ability to pass through landscapes and feel at one with it, boiling down what is needed in life, plenty of time in your own thoughts but also the ability to get lost in really thinking of nothing at all but peddling. Finally, what I would say is the most important - no emails, no scrolling, no wasteful moments - everything thing is cherished even the 25% hills.

Coming back from only a few days in nature fully energised to take on what this week has to throw at me.

A house by a beach.

We have come to end of a very positive consultation period and now heading into planning for an extension and super deep sustainable retrofit for the property that sits in the middle of the frame. Unlike many along this stretch of beach who chose to replace, we have looked to hold onto the old and update. Practically and ecologically it makes sense. An existing block built building which has stood strong for near 100 years does not need to be torn down if you can make it last another 100 years with a new lease of life.

From the Parish Council to all the neighbours, it’s been commended for putting the planet first while creating a ‘new’ home that is fit for the site. Our clients are thrilled and so are we, but knowing the hurdle of planning is still to come.

Farmhouse feasibility.

Egger for a kitchen / living space that connected to the garden rather than to a dark bank behind the house, we were bought in to reimagine what might be possible. A client who knows their way around a plan and makes construction projects happen for other people every day, it was nice to spend a morning walking around their new farmstead and offering some quick thoughts of what might be possible.

A light filled oak frame extension brings you out into the west facing garden and joins up the kitchen with the kitchen garden. Still work to do on designing for the pet goats, but that might take a little longer than a few hours and pen and paper.

Early bird.

Last month a few of the team took on the 300miles by bike through July challenge to raise money for charity. With lots of packed weekend plans many of the miles were being done early before work when you have the lanes to yourself.

The team raised nearly £1000 for @macmillancancer and got some great exercise in too.

A home in the countryside.

Plans are all drawn up for this family home set in the rolling valleys leading down to the Helford. Being in a particularly rural setting, inspiration was drawn from the pole barns and agricultural sheds that surround it.

We have been working though this proposal for some time now navigating the challenges of National Landscapes, Listed Buildings and weaving our clients brief into a building that will be their forever home.

Into planning for the end of the month.

Looks can be deceiving.

Contemporary metal box extension to the rear with modern landscaping to compliment, with a traditionally updated and fully renovated home to the front with time-honoured garden to look out upon.

Some of the scenes from a wonderful project down on the Helford as the ever so close finishing touches take place.

Life’s a beach.

Set a stones throw from a North Cornwall sandy beach, this project is set to tick a lot of boxes. Unlike many along this little lane, we are picking to retain the existing structure and add/adapt areas to give it a new lease of life from how it looks and feels to how it performance in the height of summer to the depths of winter.

We are helping our client through the whole process, from early concept design work, planning and consultation, building regs with a construction package and getting the right contractor on board to work with them and us. A full turn key solution which is been really helpful as they are currently at a bit of a distance from the house.

Morning light.

The recent heatwave(s) have raised a lot of questions about how to adapt our homes or how to design for a cool home in the future. We have been happy to help new and existing clients with their worries, designing to keep the harsh summer sun out while maintaining good solar gain in the winter.

With such long period of high heat we have been making sure we are up and out early to enjoy the outside with family and pets before it becomes to uncomfortable.

If you want to have a chat about what you could do to your home or a project you have in mind, do get in touch.

Coastal rework.

As an already fairly iconic modern property, the proposal to keep with the theme seemed right. Taking the buildings tied shell and building back up to be a newly iconic modern property.

The scheme brings with it all the low energy essentials from big thermal upgrade, new heating and electrics, proper ventilation system, performance enhancing windows and door. This will no longer we a cold leaky house but a toasty airtight home.

Our client is very good on the tools with a back ground in making, so one expects the interiors will be as good as the brief set for the building sustainable upgrades.
