Trojan Hortus is underway.

Yesterday we took our 2nd and 3rd year @utslandscape students to the RGB Botanic Gardens of Sydney; a fitting first field day for a studio that treats the garden as anything but neutral ground.

The studio takes its name from the hortus conclusus, the walled garden, and from the horse: the idea that a garden can be weaponised beyond the wall, spreading out to the city. Ian Hamilton Finlay put it better than we can

— "Certain gardens are described as retreats when they are really attacks."

We're running it as an industry-embedded studio; taught out of Studio Georgouras by practising landscape architects, with Alex Georgouras and Amaury Dufour co-teaching, and Angela Basaui Nunez providing field research the students otherwise couldn't access.

Thanks to University of Technology Sydney for backing a studio with this much ambition in it.

Loreto Kirribilli – St Joseph’s Quad - Cammeraygal

STUDIO GEORGOURAS, in collaboration with @bvnarchitecture , has lodged a DA for the renewal of the St Joseph’s Quad at Loreto Kirribilli.

The proposal reinterprets the small tributary creeks that once sustained the site’s endemic gallery rainforest ecologies through a series of interconnected rain gardens woven throughout the courtyard. These landscaped biofiltration islands collect and convey stormwater across the site, re-establishing a visible hydrological narrative within an otherwise highly urban setting.

Planted with Livistona australis (Cabbage Palm) and Cyathea australis (Rough Tree Fern), the gardens create immersive subtropical microclimates that provide shade, cooling and moments of connection to nature for students.

An elevated lightweight canopy filters light across the courtyard while directing rainfall into the integrated WSUD system below, reinforcing the relationship between water, planting and occupation. Softly rounded brick-edged garden forms are paired with robust materials including locally fired brick, coloured concrete and FRP elements selected for durability, tactility and long-term performance within a high-use school environment.

The project prioritises passive cooling, stormwater reuse and biodiversity while creating a socially flexible learning landscape that supports gathering, study and informal play.

We’re excited to share that our Spa & Wellness precinct at Tasman Holiday Parks – Racecourse Beach has received DA approval.

Set within the existing coastal landscape, the design brings together a series of outdoor bathing experiences—warm pools, cold plunge, and shower elements—carefully embedded within native planting and existing canopy.

The intent is simple: slow down, reconnect, and immerse in place. Stand out plant species will be Banksia intergrifolia 'Coastal Banksia' and Rhagodia spinescens 'Saltbush'.

A sequence of spaces shaped by landscape, materiality and atmosphere—where architecture recedes and the experience of Country leads.

Looking forward to taking this into the next phase.

Revisiting a small yet elegant project we designed at the ANBG back in 2022.

Initiated during COVID, the upgrade sought to improve amenity for the café by clarifying access and strengthening legibility. A key focus was retaining and framing the stand of manna gums, allowing them to form a natural edge to a now highly usable lawn space.

Huge thanks to the talented horticulturalists at @anbgalive, whose knowledge of local endemics shaped the planting strategy — and who generously propagated many of the species on site. Gratitude also to the Friends of the Garden for making the project possible through joint funding.

Progress on our Vaucluse Barn.

The landscape is beginning to take shape around the emerging architecture, with rewilding strategies centred on native grasses, low shrubs, and a relaxed coastal palette supported by permeable paving and the subtle grading of a planted swale. These systems work together to soften the built form over time and create a gentle transition between the house and the surrounding hillside.

Sandstone boulders—carefully salvaged and stockpiled during excavation—are now being reintroduced to the site. They anchor key thresholds, frame views to the ocean, and sit in dialogue with the mature Lophostemon confertus retained as a defining element of the frontage. Together, these components establish a grounded, site-responsive framework that the planting will gradually weave through.

We’re looking forward to seeing this next phase come to life when @bateslandscape commence works on site over the coming months.

We’re so grateful to keep working alongside First Nations Advisor and Bundjalung man, Barry Williams.

From our early days teaching together at the University of Newcastle to now collaborating on studio projects — Barry continues to guide us in embedding First Nations thinking across everything we do.

Always listening, learning, and sharing yarns along the way.

We are grateful to have @alex_georgouras appointed to the NSW State Design Review Panel.

As one of 100 design professionals, and the only emerging landscape practice represented on the panel, it’s a privilege to help shape projects of state significance.

Having previously presented work to the panel, it’s an honour to now contribute from the other side — an opportunity to listen, learn and share perspectives on design quality across NSW.

The program supports design excellence by offering independent advice and fostering more thoughtful, resilient and people-centred outcomes.

Looking forward to the conversations and collaboration ahead!
