This collection of work explores the woodland as a symbiotic community, drawing parallels between ecological systems and our human communities.

Observing a woodland in South Wales over the course of a year, the collection of teapots and cups depict the individuals of the woodland throughout the four seasons.

Cups and mugs are objects of social activity and gathering, facilitating community connection as well as connecting people to the diverse beauty and wisdom of nature.

I invite you to reflect on the communities you are a part of, and consider how they have shaped you.

The individuals of the woodland are depicted through slip and stencil decoration, coated with ash glaze to directly connect people to the natural world through use.

Cups are objects of social connection, facilitating community engagement inspired by nature’s example.

Atmospheric lamps imitating the warm glow of the tree canopies on a sunny day in Bishops Meadow, Hereford.
Looking up at the glowing canopy as I’m walking through the row of trees grounds and calms me, while also providing an opportunity to slow down and be present. These water-etched porcelain lamps have been designed to bring these well-being benefits into a home or other calm environment.

Here is a little insight into my slip and stencil decorating process!

I’m super excited to announce that I’m a resident maker at Cup Ceramics for the month of August!
My degree show work is also currently exhibited in the Cup Gallery 😁 @cupcoffeehouseandgallery

I am planning to use my workshop access to test the possibilities of my decorating process on other vessels that foster community and human connection, such as bowls and plates. I have also collected some more photos of the summer woodland ‘individuals’ and plan to make drawings of them into stencils to expand and refine my existing collection of cups and teapots.

I will be posting updates on here throughout the month of what I throw, turn and decorate!

Outcomes from a raku pottery day at @cupceramics (in late September 😅). They threw, turned and bisqued these lovely forms and gave us full reign to decorate them with a bunch of different techniques:

1st slide is Obvara, a bread-like mixture added when red hot

2nd and 4th slide are brushed on glazes in reduction fire

3rd is a mix of glaze fire and burning horse hair onto the unglazed areas, I love how the glaze running and the mountain/tree-like drawings were by complete chance on my part 💙

5 slide is a mix of horsehair and a feather, white glaze and spots of blue glaze, the running/dripping effect was a beautiful happy accident :)

Final little post about the paint-your-own-pottery workshop: the 1 pot of 10 that collapsed (it wasn’t properly centred and I pulled the walls up way too fast and wonky😭)

I was going to discard it into reclaim but decided to keep and paint during the workshop while everyone painted their proper pots as a little experimental sample.

Once it was glazed fired I loved how coastal it felt, and liked the leftover marks from where I’d clawed it off the wheel 😅 so considered it as an object you just hold in your hands??

Just a little thing made purely for fun :)

This was the first proper time I’ve batch made a form and I couldn’t be happier that 9 out of 10 were successfully thrown and turned :)

I kept the form simple for the participants to make their own when painting the surface (see last two posts for the results!) so they each got the same blank canvas (and cuz the form was easy for me to replicate!) :))

Next task is to batch throw some mugs to sample some ideas :)

For my professional practice module I hosted a paint-your-own-pottery workshop with my fine art mates :)

I threw and trimmed all the pots myself to be roughly identical so that I wasn’t projecting any of my own style onto the participants, and they could decorate their vessels however they pleased with underglaze and sgraffito.

As they were unfired at the time of painting there was the option to have drainage holes carved into the bottom if they wanted, but I also designed the rim of each to also be comfortable to drink out of too if they wished to use it as a handle-less mug.

They were bisqued fired and clear glazed - will post what they look like now in my next post!
